Amazing and eerie coincidence during the reading of names at The Wall

I heard this story today on WAMU, the DC public radio station. They were speaking with the head of the Vietnam Memorial Committee. He shared stories of strange and wonderful coincidences that occurred at The Wall.

This story happened during the annual Veterans Day name reading on the 10th anniversary of its dedication.

A very small woman was standing in the line of people waiting to read their names. Directly behind her was a very large man. The wait was about an hour. Over that time, they spoke a lot and got to know each other just a little bit.

When her turn came, she read from her list of names. At the end, she said "and the last name on my list is my son, <name>."

The big man broke down. He had been searching for years for the family of the man who died in his arms on the battlefield. He found them that day.

To all my fellow vets, thanks for doing what you did. I wish you nothing but peace.

A friend of mine is a retired Army colonel. His Dad is a retired Marine, now in his 80s. Some years ago, the dad was at an American Legion Veterans' Day event in Maryland. Two Viet Nam vets, who had lived near each other for decades but had never met, were talking about their experiences. One said he was a dustoff pilot. The other one said his encounter with dustoff pilots was reading the back of one's helmet as he was being evacuated. The helmet had a slogan painted on it. He never saw the guy's face. He quoted the slogan.

The first guy said "that was me."
