Paul Ryan's chief of staff would not confirm or deny whether he has been contacted by special counsel Robert Mueller about how a Ukraine-related provision was killed at the 2016 GOP convention.
As U.S. investigators probe whether President Donald Trump's campaign orchestrated a Russia-friendly change to the Republican Party platform last summer, three senior Capitol Hill aides including Speaker Paul Ryan's chief of staff may have answers about how the episode unfolded.
The three staffers, who have not been accused of any wrongdoing, advised the GOP convention's platform committee on foreign policy matters and had front-row seats when a low-profile group of delegates, acting in conjunction with Trump campaign officials, spiked a proposal urging a tougher U.S. policy against Russian aggression in Ukraine.

Spokespeople for the offices of two of the staffers told POLITICO they have not been in contact with Mueller or his team. But Ryan's top aide, Jonathan Burks, would neither confirm nor deny whether he had heard from the special counsel: I'm not going to have any comment, he said.
Burks attended the GOP convention in a personal capacity as a volunteer for the Republican Party and the 2016 convention, not as a representative of Ryans office. At the time, he was a national security adviser to the speaker. Ryan promoted Burks to chief of staff in December. Ryans office also refused repeated requests to confirm or deny whether Burks has been in contact with Mueller.

A month before Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination, one of his closest allies in Congress House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy made a politically explosive assertion in a private conversation on Capitol Hill with his fellow GOP leaders: that Trump could be the beneficiary of payments from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Theres two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump, McCarthy (R-Calif.) said, according to a recording of the June 15, 2016, exchange, which was listened to and verified by The Washington Post. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is a Californian Republican known in Congress as a fervent defender of Putin and Russia.
House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) immediately interjected, stopping the conversation from further exploring McCarthys assertion, and swore the Republicans present to secrecy.
Before the conversation, McCarthy and Ryan had emerged from separate talks at the Capitol with Ukrainian Prime Minister Vladimir Groysman, who had described a Kremlin tactic of financing populist politicians to undercut Eastern European democratic institutions.

(7,768 posts)It's unclear to me how this leaked out and by whom. (is "whom" correct or should it be "who"? lol)
I thought I heard that someone clandestinely recorded this conversation. When they were outed, they said it was all a joke and they were just kidding around even though McCarthy said, "Swear to God".
I keep thinking I heard Evan McMullin's name associated somehow. Was he the guy that may have recorded or leaked this conversation?
Thanks for any info! I want these rat-bastard traitors busted SO bad!
