(58,785 posts)But now I'm feeling a little "white-shamed." Unfortunate juxtaposition of clicking here after just shopping for new white winter tchotchkes for the mantle after several years of gold and saffron fruits and brass candlesticks. White on white walls (yes), and white/cream to accessorize an elderly painting of the Mojave Desert--covered in snow.
Until now my biggest problems were finding a less expensive version of a Crate and Barrel white berry garland (dark brown stems, tho!) and wondering if berries clashed with desert. (I'm kind of anal about these things but won't be consulting you-know-who.)
Life is complicated.

(58,785 posts)ceramic pumpkin in creams and green, definitely no symbolism. Just took a good look at the rest of the composition. If you don't know when to stop, at least start with a smaller shell?
I confess I like orange as long as it's not in presidents, or with browns.

(90,765 posts)Now that she has posted that photo, the price will go up.
I guess the Lumina will now go the way of Kale and Swamp cabbage. Overpriced for no reason other than to appeal to those who don't know better.
Kale used to be super cheap until someone got the idea to market it as the next big thing. Even though kale has been around forever - both used as garnish and to eat. Poor and not so poor people ate it. Now, it's gotten more expensive.
Swamp cabbage is what some call hearts of palm. Guess it sounds better and you can charge more for it on the menu with that name. But it's swamp cabbage, from the Sabal palm - once a stable of poor people. People still gather their own and it's still called swamp cabbage - unless on a menu in an upscale restaurant. I'd wager you could place both swamp cabbage and hearts of palm on the same menu and people would choose the higher-priced hearts of palm, never knowing both are the same thing.
I've been to high-end eateries where they bragged about their poke sallat and dandelion infusions and couldn't stop laughing. Charging an arm and a leg for greens poor people have been eating for centuries because that's all they had.
I do wish people would stop "discovering" the already long discovered and enjoyed by those who don't have a lot of wealth. You're pricing us out of everything.
And the raving about your "discovery" is ever so annoying.
OK. I'm over it now. Back to giving dirt a brand name and calling it the next new thing in bowel cleansing for a healthier chakra.

(90,765 posts)Dress up something commonplace and ordinary and then charge more for it - and some people will pay whatever price you're asking.
The power of marketing is awesome - and scary.
Creating a need where none exist and causing people to demand something they never needed (and still don't) but simply have to have now.
Taking something old and treating it as something new and exciting - and placing enough of a price tag on it to make it exclusive - making the buyer hip and cool.

Shells of giant clam, one of the most endangered species, are very dear to the Chinese. The shells make beautiful ornaments that are considered auspicious and aesthetically appealing. In order to maintain uninterrupted supply of these coveted shells, clam harvesters are wreaking havoc on the ecosystem of the South China Sea. While China had banned harvesting of giant clams in 2015, the residents of a seaside town, Tanmen, on the southern island of Hainan, continue to plunder seabed. Surprisingly, clam harvesting and making ornaments have become a large-scale industry where around 100,000 people are employed. The village, now, has 460 handicraft retailers, compared to just 15 in 2012.
Are villagers enjoying impunity?
How is it that the villagers are not implicated despite carrying on with illegal harvesting? Zhang Hongzhou, an associate research fellow at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, explains: "With rising tensions in the South China Sea, Tanmen fishermen's important role in strengthening China's claims in the disputed waters and supporting the People's Liberation Army navy are recognised by the Chinese government. As a result, authorities have turned a blind eye."
The local government refutes such allegations. In March 2015, the Qionghai government announced its intention to enforce ban on digging, carrying and selling of endangered marine species, including the giant clams. While some government officials claim that the authority is enforcing the ban, others assert that the authorities were not doing anything to support the industry. Despite the supposed ban on harvesting, stores on the streets of Tanmen openly sell intricately carved giant-clam shells. Many fishermen sell uncarved shells from their homes and others are employed in shell-carving factories.
Impact on South China reef
Chinas appetite for giant clam shells, which are used for interior decor and jewellery, has stripped large swathes of the South China Sea as boats scrape reefs to expose the clams. According to marine biologist McManus, the Chinese method of dragging small boat propellers across a reef to break up the coral bed and uncover giant mollusks has caused severe damage to more than 100 sq km in 40 coral reefs in the South China Sea. He said that at least 20 other shallow reefs are threatened by the resulting huge plumes of sand and silt killing almost all aquatic life.
"What used to be really good coral reefs in there have definitely been decimated over the last two to three years," said Neo Mei Lin, a marine biologist at the National University of Singapore."I think the Hainanese have essentially taken out all the giant clam shells from the South China Sea, dead or alive," said Ed Gomez, a senior adviser at the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute.

(3,208 posts)After years of cleaning in rich folk's homes, one thing I learned is they have very odd tastes. Sometimes it was very hard not to make an involuntary reaction (Ugh!).
Aside from that, this "centerpiece" is not very friendly, unless you really don't want to look at the person across from you (and if I was at a trump gathering, that would be the case! And I would make good use of the smaller, harder items in this thing!)

(32,639 posts)Also these may not be pumpkins.
There are other squashes that look like small pumpkins, and you have to pick them quickly or they turn green on the vine. These may be really young squash, or possibly they were another color when picked and somebody dyed them white for the effect. Or they could be wax (fake). It's hard to tell from the photo.
