Schumer, Pelosi Cancel Show Meeting With Trump On Government Funding (Democrats Finally catch on!)

Democratic leaders in Congress bailed on a meeting with President Donald Trump on Tuesday just hours before it was set to begin, saying it would only be a “show meeting that won’t result in an agreement” and they would be better served negotiating with their Republican counterparts.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) were scheduled to go to the White House on Tuesday afternoon to negotiate a spending package to avert a government shutdown. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) were also set to attend the meeting with Trump.

Schumer and Pelosi said they have requested a meeting with McConnell and Ryan on Tuesday afternoon instead.

The Democratic Party leaders are starting to see the light. If they had met, Trump and the GOP would use the meeting as the reason why everything is not coming together. It was the Democratic politicians fault. We in the GOP offered our solutions but the democrats would not agree to anything.

kills one hundred million of us as long as there was some sort of excuse for it, like we just dont have enough medicine and food for everybody.

McConnell and Ryan would love that budget or law, and Schumer and Pelosi would not.

That is how simple our politics are now.

he can use the canceled meeting just as well as a meeting that produces nothing to blame it all on democrats.

the main advantage is that a meeting with ryan and mcturtle but without donnie is more likely to be at least somewhat constructive.

I also think that Schumer and Pelosi are turning on the administration, even though they knew all along that meeting with Trump was pointless in the past. Now they can say that they gave Trump a fair shot to demonstrate good faith dealing, and he failed to do that. They don't need to justify changing their attitude, because it's Trump's fault.

I will stretch this point a little to address the recent profile in the New York Times of that fucking nazi in Ohio. It's imperative when profiling a fucking nazi that you explain not only that the subject is a fucking nazi, but why that's not a good thing. The Times failed to explain that to its readers, and even after posting an addendum from the writer that of course, everyone knows that it's not good to be a fucking nazi, they failed their readers by not putting that in the original story. As we've seen over the past year, a lot of people are confused about whether or not it's acceptable to be a fucking nazi. It's NOT!

So, when Schumer and Pelosi decline to meet with Trump because he isn't a faithful negotiator, it's important to spell that out, and they did in this instance. So good on them for explaining, contemporaneously, why they weren't going to meet with Trump. Sad to say they'll have to explain it again and every time, but explaining it once makes it easier to explain it again. And again. And again, until the general public internalizes the point that "negotiating" with Trump is a dead end.
