Zero tolerance means consequences for everyone

Nancy Pelosi‏ @NancyPelosi 8h8 hours ago

Zero tolerance means consequences – for everyone. No matter your contribution to our country, you do not get a pass to harass or discriminate.

...Pelosi has called for further investigation, says the women who 'settled' should be heard.

This statement puts to rest any notion that she's going to be deterred from holding Conyers accountable for misconduct, just because he made important contributions to the country.

...I think it was a responsible statement.

People bearing down on Pelosi look more concerned with scoring political points against the Dem leader than with due process for his accusers (which Pelosi clearly supports).

...of course not.

Her FIRST statement called for further investigation.

besides...

Top Democrats, including Pelosi, pressuring Conyers to resign

Tuesday, the House's top Democrat wrote a letter to the House Ethics Committee urging them to move quickly with its inquiry.

"We are at a watershed moment for our country in the fight against sexual harassment and discrimination," Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said. "The Committee on Ethics has a great responsibility to proceed expeditiously as well as fairly into any investigation of credible harassment and discrimination allegations."

...to suit your opinion.

She's not resting on 'Jon Conyers is an icon.'

He certainly is an icon.

That doesn't excuse any misbehavior by the congressman. That's what Pelosi said. Parsing her words, as many in the media and elsewhere have, to make it appear she's defending Conyers against the charges, ignores her immediate and consistent calls for a full investigation and an open process where these women silenced by confidentiality agreements can be heard. THAT's also what was said by Rep. Pelosi.

You can emphasize whatever suits you, but you're obviously working from a selective and abbreviated script.

...she hasn't leapt to conclusions.

She's called for a full ethics investigation and an opportunity for the women shielded from talking by confidentiality agreements to be heard (after speaking with one of his senior co-workers).

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement after speaking with Ms. Melanie Sloan this afternoon:

“This afternoon, I spoke with Melanie Sloan who worked for Congressman Conyers on the Judiciary Committee in the mid-1990s. Ms. Sloan told me that she had publicly discussed distressing experiences while on his staff. I find the behavior Ms. Sloan described unacceptable and disappointing. I believe what Ms. Sloan has told me.

“Ms. Sloan, as a respected ethics expert and attorney, also gave me valuable feedback into the substantive reforms many of us in Congress are advocating to foster a climate of respect and dignity, and to protect legislative branch employees.

“I have not had the opportunity to speak with the other women, one of whom cannot speak publicly because of the secretive settlement process in place. That ridiculous system must be ended and victims who want to come forward to the Ethics Committee must be able to do so.”
