But some county probate judges, prodded by the state’s extreme Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, are refusing to issue licenses to same-sex couples. As of Monday morning, news media was reporting defiance in the following counties: Clarke, Covington, Elmore, Lee, Marengo, Pike, Shelby, Tuscaloosa and Washington.
