The 2019 Swiss elections: Results in detail

The historic gains made by the left-wing Greens exceeded expectations, turning the 2019 elections into a bellwether moment on climate change and environmental issues. The Greens gained 17 seats, overtaking the Christian Democrats, to become the fourth-largest party in parliament. This was the largest leap by a political party in Swiss politics since 1919. The centrist Liberal Greens gained nine seats.

A look at regional constituencies shows where the parties gained more votes compared to the 2015 elections (upward arrows) - and where they lost (downward arrows). The more pointed the arrow, the greater the change.

The maps show clear patterns: The Greens and the Liberal Green Party won votes in almost all Swiss districts. The Liberal Green Party particularly gained ground in the Zurich area and in the West. The Greens are also now the strongest party in Geneva.

More women than ever before will be in the House of Representatives. The share of women lawmakers rose from 32 to 42%.

I am absolutely delighted to see the gains made by the Greens, especially in light of elections in European countries that have demonstrated strong showings by RW groups.

A personal anecdote: in 2017, I went into Geneva to participate in the Climate March. My intention was to join with the American Democrats Abroad group, but I was unable to find them. The Geneva Greens "adopted" me and I found myself marching at the head of their delegation, together with their Chair! We had a great time! And it was an incredibly moving experience!

I am so happy to see my adoptive family doing well, especially with such an important issue!
