Agence France-Presse: Russia's guy says Ukraine run by 'miserable Jews'
Source: Agence France Press
Donetsk (Ukraine) (AFP) - Ukraine's pro-Russian rebel chief on Monday branded the country's leaders "miserable" Jews in an apparent anti-Semitic jibe.
Alexander Zakharchenko, leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, claimed that Kiev's pro-Western leaders were "miserable representatives of the great Jewish people".
"I can't remember a time when Cossacks were led by people who have never held a sword in their hands," Zakharchenko told a press conference in the eastern rebel stronghold of Donetsk, in a reference to Ukraine's nationalist forebears, the Cossacks.
Zakharchenko said that the country's historical nationalists "would turn in their graves if they could see who is running Ukraine."

(3,317 posts)if some liberal, perhaps from the UK, had a few years ago branded America's neoconservative leaders who were invading foreign countries as "miserable representatives of the great American people" and had said "I can't remember a time when this great nation was led by draft-dodgers. The founders of that great nation would turn in their graves if they could see who is running the US ..."
Surely, news outlets all over the world would have immediately engaged in speculation over whether such godless liberals were congenital America haters and racists or just insane.

Behind the Aegis
(53,965 posts)It wasn't too long ago how they were condemning anti-Semitism; of course, it was coming from Ukraine's side. "You don't look fat in that dress at all!" What?! That isn't a compliment?! Say it isn't so!
I love the comment about the Cossacks. The same group who ran my father's relatives out of Belarus! A quarter of them came to the States, the rest went to Poland. Guess which ones my dad is descended from?

(18,402 posts)Or not--so many fled that region. My (paternal) grandparents were from around Brest-Litovsk--sometimes in Belarus, sometimes in Poland, depending on the season. In their family, some came to the United States, some to Argentina.
Behind the Aegis
(53,965 posts)They were from the capitol of Belarus and one of it's Jewish suburbs. What we do know are none (supposedly) went to Warsaw. It has been hard finding records as they were either destroyed (by Cossacks, invading Germans), lost, or incomplete. I was particularly amazed to discover how many at the time (late 1800's) still didn't have a real last name!
frazzled
(18,402 posts)A lot of what we know comes simply from first-generation knowledge. My grandmother and grandfather (and his brothers) made it to the US (this was at the beginning of the 20th century); my grandmother's brother and his family went to Buenos Aires. Because we actually knew both parts of the family, this much we know (though of course they weren't big on reliving the past and going in to much detail). Going back any farther is almost impossible.
My husband's family, also from that general region in Eastern Europe had an interesting migration: his father's family escaped to Wales (where his father, the youngest, was born). Wales, as it turns out, had a substantial influx of Jewish refugees. In more recent years he discovered that another part of the family ended up in Hong Kong. But we've never been able to find out anything about them.
This is what diaspora means. It leaves you feeling a bit of an orphan: you don't know quite where your people came from, and even if you did, very little of their world would exist anymore.
