GOP Rep On Vaccines: An 'Oppressive State' Shouldn't Tell Us What To Do

ByTracy WalshPublishedFebruary 3, 2015, 10:46 AM EST

Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI) became the latest Republican on Tuesday to speak out against vaccine mandates, saying: "We should not have an oppressive state telling us what to do."

"I want that to be my choice as a parent," Duffy, a father of seven, said said during an appearance on MSNBC's "The Rundown With José Díaz-Balart." "I know my kids best. I know what morals and values are right for my children. I think we should not have an oppressive state telling us what to do."..............

The Wisconsin congressman explicitly defended vaccine critics, saying: "I think a lot of parents who are smart, well-read — they're the ones who are choosing not to vaccinate. And oftentimes, those who may not be as well-read — they are vaccinating. So to say you just have a bunch of crackpots who are choosing not to do this to their children, I just don't think that's actually true."
...............

"I vaccinate my kids on most things, but then there are some things where I'm like, 'This may not work for me and my values and my family,'" he said.

Kids don't choose their parents.

If people ask me whether not having your kids vaccinated makes one a bad parent, I have to be honest and say, yes, in my opinion, it does.

Vaccines work. They save lives. Refusing vaccines as an adult is one thing. Denying that protection to your kids borders on child abuse, IMO.

9. I'm not wishing a bad thing on them. I want them to live by their values.

It all comes down to their values, it would be oppressive to force mumps vaccine on them. I agree, denying vaccine to children borders on child abuse.

3. I don't get how mandatory vaccines could even come close to being a form of tyranny

The government puts fluoride in the water. That affects everyone.

How is mandating vaccines any different? We all do things required by our society as a condition of being part of it. We wear "appropriate" clothes even when the weather is hot. We stop at stop signs. We live within rules re: how we can and can't feed and house our kids.

I just don't see how getting a shot is a massive violation of anyone's liberty. It's not even much of an inconvenience.

This is about the HPV vaccine. That's what is REALLY getting right-wing knickers all twisted up. They are afraid that, if the government can mandate vaccines, then the HPV shot will get thrown into the mix.

8. By way of background, Duffy represents the 7th, the northernmost Cong. district in WI.

Liberal old David Obey held that seat for decades, until he retired. The district was badly gerrymandered by the Republicans after the bloodbath of 2010. Duffy himself entered politics by being elected DA in Ashland County.

He is, to be short and blunt about it, slime.

Congressman Grayson was right about the GOP

Get sick, die quickly.

I'm assuming that his kids got vaccinated. Would he be OK if children or a child attend his children's school who were not vaccinated. HELL NO.

Hypocrite.
