‘Nuclear’ fireball alarms Donetsk after chemical plant hit

Source: News AU

AN enormous fireball has ballooned over the Ukrainian city of Donetsk after a chemical plant was hit — sending some into a nuclear panic.

The powerful explosion sparked widespread fires outside the separatist stronghold of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, where fierce fighting has surged despite a renewed diplomatic push for peace.

In Washington, President Barack Obama held talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel about reviving an elusive Ukraine peace plan, a meeting that comes as she and French President Francois Hollande are getting ready to meet tomorrow with their counterparts from Russia and Ukraine.

‘Nuclear’ shock rocks Ukraine

The day after ... Initial fears this blast was caused by a nuclear weapon were dispelled when it was found to have been a chemical plant hit in fighting between Ukrainian government and separatist forces.

Putin's gift to Europe: massive war with no end in sight. My guess is he doesn't care at long as Russia ends up controlling the region to have a road to Crimea.

Nuclear, not a chance. Unless Russia supplied them as Ukraine gave those nuclear weapons up after the Budapest agreement was signed that in the end Russia broke.

If it was a nuclear blast we'd be hearing a LOT more about it.

The 'article' with with nuclear in the title even in quotes is just plain dishonest. It was a large explosion yes, but it was in no way nuclear.

I've edited my comments.
However, I believe the poster needs to also take responsibility for posting a link to an article that is quite misleading. An article that appears to be intended to mislead and inflame the situation.

definitely NOT a DU lie. The article, on the other hand, that's something else.

A video posted in V&MM, not by Uhnope, called it a 'mushroom cloud.' It led to speculation:

But Uhnope's article clears the air of that story by saying it was a chemical plant blowing up. This is a much better article than the video which the poster himself said he wasn't sure what it was about.

The people of the region and others in the neighborhood have reason to fear nuclear explosions because Chernobyl is in their backyard.

It's over 400 miles from Donetsk but in the human psyche, you just can't get far enough away from it.

Here is a video I posted on Chernobyl showing the great expertise of the Ukrainians in dealing with it. We shouldn't forget Ukraine was a nuclear power itself.

The title of the video was OTT, though, but I explained that after watching it. Luckily, it's in English:

When people see 'mushroom clouds,' they are conditioned to think 'nuclear.' That's all that's going on here, IMO. AU went with previous speculation, but they cleared it up quickly.

AND--tragically--prior to this, the "crossroads of civilization" was known as the "breadbasket of the USSR." All of this matters. History matters. It certainly does. Keep perspective.

The people who live there and have been irreparably harmed by the wastage of a nuclear energy catastrophe...and now, ethno-nationalistic strife in a geopolitical vacuum. If I weren't atheist I'd pray for peace in Ukraine.

The US should push for UN peacekeeping troops as a buffer between these warring factions or this slaughter will continue unabated.

The figthing in the region could impact the protection zone around Chernobyl. And instability in Ukraine could affect the social infrastructure that maintains the zone to protect humans. See my post above, if you want to read more. Your reply is a good one.

There was worldwide concern last August when several shells hit near this chemical plant. OSCE investigated at the time.
