Cities Shut Down in Snowy South, Bitter Cold Ahead for Northern U.S.

Some southern cities shut down Wednesday as heavy snow fell across the region, while winter weather continued to set record lows in other parts of the country, and contributed to a huge pileup in Maine.

And even more snow was expected in a band from northern North Carolina to Virginia, where as much as a foot of snow could fall from Wednesday night and into Thursday. Meanwhile, bitterly cold temperatures were expected in the plains and Midwest — Fargo, North Dakota, will feel like minus-33 degrees Thursday, forecasters said.

Boston got almost two inches of more snow between Tuesday and Wednesday to push that city's season total to 101.8 inches, just 5.8 inches shy of the season record set in the winter of 1995 and 1996, the National Weather Service reported.

In Maine, a section of snow-covered Interstate 95 was shut down by a massive pileup involving 70 cars that sent 17 people to area hospitals, authorities said. The 7:30 a.m. crash near Carmel and Etna shut down the northbound lanes until 12:30 p.m.
