No Shutdown For Now: Congress Passes Week-Long Homeland Security Patch
Source: NBC NEWS
Two hours before a midnight deadline, Congress has narrowly averted a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security for one week, setting up another funding showdown for next Friday.
Hours before a midnight deadline, the House easily approved a one-week extension of the funding. The vote was 357-60. It required two-thirds of members' support to pass.
President Barack Obama later signed the bill.
The move means that DHS will not experience a shutdown at midnight, but it also fails to resolve the impasse created when the House initially lashed together the agency's budget and so-called "riders" that would gut the president's immigration proposals. Some House conservatives said that Obama's actions are unconstitutional and must be stopped - even at the cost of a DHS funding lapse.

(21,811 posts)Once again, the Republicans fell apart and couldn't pass their own legislation. The Democrats had to step up and broker a deal. I saw yesterday that Boehner and McConnell are not even speaking to each other.
It's easy to bitch and throw tantrums, but it takes adults to solve problems.

(26,322 posts)I mean sure alot of it is because of the gerrymandering the republicans have done and some of its also due to the fact that their base only gets its news from limited and biased sources that act in effect like the republican PR arm like fox news but not all of it is due to that so its mind boggling that enough voters still vote republican.

(18,641 posts)They don't pay attention to politics.
They just get angry when the TV tells them to, automatically vote Republican without hearing or understanding anything, and then are completely oblivious to anything happening any other time.
That's the GOP's big advantage.
Their base doesn't have the mental capacity to understand politics.

(24,720 posts)This little charade by the right wing entire republican party should show this country cannot and should not be functioning like this.
There has not been a long term funding in this country for over 8 years, and by long term I mean every two to four years since the right wing entire republican party has gained and had power in one chamber or another, look to further than the 419 filibusters that Turtle lips McConnell as done when he was in the minority (not one jobs bill) and not one jobs bill or unemployment extension benefits for the uninsured, and now that he has the majority he presents bills that will be filibustered by the minority democrats, like the Keystone pipeline, Social Security Disability Benefits, Social Security, ect....,-----amazing, but serious on the complete lack of leadership called the right wing republican party of and for the oligarchy of the ELITE MILLIONARIES AND ELITE BILLIONARIES and a oligarchy media not asking or doing there job.
And what can you say about the paycheck tobacco lobbyist on the House floor and ever since 1996 and that blatant corruption from one John Boehner,(not one jobs bill but demigod and attack Social Security Disability Benefits, Social Security, Healthcare, further eroding the Postal System, ect...) who last year recessed the House for 244 days vacation days in the 113th Congress and did absolutely nothing and I mean absolutely nothing, and now they have taken off 18 days so far this year---amazing and the media says nothing about this nothing, (except get bills from the majority democratic senate that were not filibustered by McConnell and his band of merry hypocrites) all they have done is just leave off and started the 114th by doing nothing in 2015.
This man and his leadership less team of right wing republican hypocrites couldn't lead a wet paper bag out of the woods if they knew it was a wet paper bag---this is totally amazing.
This vote shows the utter complete contempt that the right wing entire republican party is and what they think of this country----nothing more than ideology hypocrites---that plays games without any ramifications except to have a speaker of the house and his little right wing colleagues in the senate and there entire party try to lay blame on the democrats---nope, you have now been exposed , you are the DO NOTHING but attack the citizens and this country party of hypocrites.
