There is "no chance" of any survivors after a plane carrying up to 130 people crashed while trying to land in bad weather near Islamabad on Friday, police said.

"There is no chance of any survivors. It will be only a miracle. The plane is totally destroyed," police officer Fazle Akbar told AFP from the crash site.

There could be deaths on the ground too:

Rescuers say the plane's wrecked fuselage was ablaze when they arrived at the site with dead bodies and body parts strewn all over the place.

A local resident told Geo News, the plane was already on fire in the midair and seemed like a ball of fire coming at us.

He also added that it appeared as if the aircraft was struck by a lightning bolt as the electrical activity in the thunderclouds above was in full swing.

The plane fell on top of houses in the village toppling many building before hitting the ground, said eyewitnesses.

Could a lightning strike do such a thing?
