Ted Nugent admits to illegal Alaska bear kill

Activist and musician Ted Nugent has signed a plea agreement with federal prosecutors admitting he took an illegally shot black bear in Southeast Alaska two years ago, according to the agreement.

Nugent, 63, launched an arrow at a black bear while on a bow-hunting trip with friends in Tongass National Forest in May 2009. Federal prosecutors say he wounded the bear, attracted to the hunters by a bait station. Nugent's lawyer says the arrow grazed the animal and it scampered off alive.

Whether injured or merely scratched, the bear got away. Nugent shot and killed another bear four days later. Then he put the scenes on TV.

The Motor City Madman was filming on Sukkwan Island, south of Hydaburg, for his TV show "Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild," according to Nugent's deal with federal prosecutors, made public Friday.

"We looked at it and we just shook our heads, saying 'I can't believe he actually aired this episode,' " Foy said. "We were all really disappointed to see this happen with a guy who is a representative of hunters."

Nugent was later charged with 11 misdemeanors related to events that unfolded on his own television show, Foy said.

The commission acknowledged that without a better system, arrests were required because of the difficulty of collecting a judgment after an offender had left the state. The compact provided that better system. It worked both ways — Texans hunting or fishing in other states could also just receive a citation and settle it on or before the appearance date instead of going to straight to court. Under the compact’s terms, an accused violator who did not make an appearance to pay the fine or contest the charge could have his hunting or fishing license suspended. Under the terms of the compact, once a license is suspended in one state, it is suspended in all participating states.

So far, 37 states have joined the compact. Arkansas, Nebraska, both Carolinas, Virginia and Maine are in the process of joining. Only the New England states haven’t.

Out of 302,000 Texans who hunt or fish out of state, seven have had their licenses suspended for “failure to appear” in other compact states, according to Scott Vaca, TPWD assistant chief of wildlife enforcement, who supervises the compact in Texas. One had his license suspended because of nine violations for false information on license applications as well as hunting a mountain lion without a nonresident license. His hunting, fishing and trapping privileges are suspended until 2016 in all compact states.

Under the compact, if a Texas hunter has his license suspended in another state for a violation that is not against the law in Texas — like hunting deer over bait — Texas may still suspend the license.

The compact benefits sportsmen who honor their responsibilities. It has teeth for those who don’t.

Rocker and gun rights advocate Ted Nugent pleaded guilty Tuesday to transporting a black bear he illegally killed in Alaska.

With his plea, Nugent followed through with a signed agreement he made with federal prosecutors earlier this month.

A judge approved the deal at a U.S. District Court hearing in the Southeast Alaska town of Ketchikan. Nugent and his attorney participated by telephone.

Asked by Magistrate Judge Michael Thompson if the agreement was clear, Nugent responded: "It is with me, your honor."
