Proctor & Gamble Becomes 13th Company To Drop ALEC

Source: Think Progress

Joining a dozen other major corporations, Proctor & Gamble decided not to rejoin the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) this year, according to a statement from Color Of Change, which launched a campaign against the shadowy right-wing front group behind state laws restricting access to the ballot and “stand your ground” gun laws.

The statement:
On Friday afternoon, we learned that P&G began reviewing its membership in January and recently decided not to rejoin ALEC in 2012. External Relations Manager Elizabeth Ratchford told us via email that, ‘Decisions about which memberships we retain are guided by budgetary considerations, value to the business and engagement on issues core to our ability to compete in the marketplace.’ The multinational corporation made the determination that ALEC does not help P&G compete for consumers’ loyalty and support.

Proctor & Gamble, a Fortune 100 company that manufactures a slew of household consumer goods, joins other blue chip companies like Coca-Cola and Kraft Foods in disassociating themselves from ALEC. P&G’s main competitor, Johnson & Johnson, has not come to the same decision, Color Of Change notes.

The good government group Common Cause filed a complaint with the IRS today contesting ALEC’s charitable tax status, arguing it is actually a lobby group getting preferential tax treatment.

Woo Hoo! Now you can continue using Tide to clean your clothes.

And kudos to Common Cause for filing a complaint with the IRS against ALEC!

Watch the dominos fall!!!!

Doesn't it seem like, as Dems or liberals or progressives, we are beset on all sides with these assholes chipping away at everything, everywhere, attacking us from every direction and in every possible way large and small, attacking us in little obscure corners where we don't even realize we're being attacked - until it's too late and the damage is done and the law is passed and taking effect and we didn't even know it was happening - either because we weren't paying attention or we didn't have operatives in that area or that state or that city or we didn't have the resources or the man-power to spread ourselves out that far. (Sorry for the run-on sentence... shows ya how my brain thinks)?

Well, we should be turning the tables and doing it BACK AT THEM. Such as - in cases like this!

EXCELLENT!!!! Keep 'em busy! Keep 'em tied up.

4. Your exactly correct, that's how we get screwed one piece of legislation at a time.

They do the same thing during elections, one lie at a time. It takes time and resources to defend against right wing lies, and since it's easier to spread lies than to defend against them the right wing often wins. They don't even need to win all the time, just winning a fraction of the time with their lies moves their cause further down the road.

8. But one more thing - just because ALEC is now CLAIMING its task forces on

screwing voters and other such shitty ideas - does NOT mean those efforts have stopped.

They'll just transfer them to other task forces (won't call 'em that, though), or other divisions, or to friends in other groups similar to ALEC to pick up the slack or take over the campaign.

CONSTANT VIGILANCE!!!!! - just like Mad-Eye Moody warned Harry Potter. It's a warning to us as well. When the bad guys say they've stopped something or had to drop some campaign (that you KNOW in your heart they just love and want to push to the max), ALWAYS go looking for where that "dropped" campaign got moved, or renamed, or divided up and its various parts slipped under the door at other organizations.

NEVER accept what these people say at face value!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3. Am I the only one who has become nervous and a little scared seeing the names of the companies

now dropping ALEC. I'm not nervous or scared that they LEFT ALEC BUT that they where connected to begin with. Considering all the ALEC legislation that came about and then seeing the companies that have basically given an approving nod until recently just makes me wonder just what company really mean what they say.

6. Not only that, but how long will it take for the next iteration of ALEC to form

We know damned good and well that these huge corporations will do whatever it takes to push their agenda, I doubt that it will take Rove and the Kochs very long to form ALEC 2.0 - and it will likely be a much improved and more stealthy organization.

9. Yep. ALWAYS be on watch. ALWAYS be on guard. NEVER trust 'em for an instant!

NEVER trust 'em. NEVER take their word for it. NEVER believe them even when they cry "uncle" and promise to stop and give it up and go away and pick something else to fight about. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!!!!

And I would go so far as to say, sickening as the idea is, we have to start thinking like they do. If we're going to outwit them and outstrategize them and outmaneuver them, we have to start trying to think the way they do.

WHERE would we move something that we had to make it look like it had been done away with? Where should we hide it? How should we conceal it? What should we call it now, so it slips and slides easily under the radar? What sounds good - like "Americans for Prosperity" or "American Crossroads," or some lofty-sounding, benign-sounding, easy-to-stomach sloganeering? What soothes the opposition into thinking the coast is clear and the danger's past - and so then they think it's settled and they roll over and go back to sleep - while WE KEEP WORKING?

I think we HAVE TO think that way. We are up against an enemy that won't give up until they get what they want, and then go for more. Never dreamed that here in America there would be efforts to take away the right to vote? Never imagined that, once the Supreme Court said Roe v Wade was settled law, that the opponents would concede defeat and stop fighting? I had a staunch republi-CON fellow karate mom once sneer at me - "meh, it's NOT gonna happen. S'NOT gonna happen" when I voiced my concern about the safety and security of a woman's right to choose (which, btw, she supported). I said - "oh yeah? Wanna bet?" I warned her that the bad guys weren't gonna stop and that it was absolutely at risk, and that they'd keep going to deny women that right as much and as hard and as far as they could. She laughed at me and said I was getting all worked up about nothing because it just simply wasn't gonna happen, that everything would be fine and I should stop worrying about it. And look where we are NOW.
