Update at 4:52 p.m. ET: Mayor Jeff Triplett asks whether an outside evaluator could come in over "three or four months" to decide whether Lee could continue to serve or has become too polarizing a figure.

Update at 4:56 p.m. ET: Mayor Jeff Triplett says "the bottom line .. the crux" of "this whole dog-and-pony show" over past two month is "where was ...policy, procedure, state statute violated" by Chief Bill Lee in the investigation of Trayvon Martin's killing.

Sanford Commission votes against police chief's resignation

SANFORD, Fla. -
The Sanford City Commission has voted to deny the resignation on Monday of Police Chief Bill Lee Jr., who temporarily stepped down from his position in connection to the Trayvon Martin shooting.

Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett called the special meeting with city commissioners Monday afternoon. Commissioners voted 3-2 against the resolution, which would have allowed City Manager Norton Bonaparte to execute the separation agreement for Lee. Under the agreement, Lee would have resigned from his post, effective at midnight.

Lee will stay on administrative leave until the outside investigation is completed, officials said. It's not clear when that will be.

Two of the commissioners that voted against the agreement, Commissioner Patty Mahany and Commissioner Randy Jones, spoke highly of Lee in a heated debate.

No accountability for acts of violence against minorities and regular people. That goes for Washington, Wall Street, and now Sanford, FL.

Disgusting.

some people out here have very long memories, and original reports. no contact with the family of the murdered young man. zimpunk released almost immediately and the litany could go on. I will never forget police CULPABILITY in this matter because it was just a dead black. What do they have to do with white male entitlement TO KILL.

Mamie Van Doren posted this on FB even before this was posted on DU. One of her friends added the note "The former police chief resigned because of a scandal involving a cop.s son who beat up a homeless man."

Sanford has hired an executive police search firm for a new police chief at the same time they refuse to accept the resignation of Chief Lee. Jon Stewart will have fun with this one.

against the city.
You know where the lawyer for the city argues to the jury that the city only acted with honorable intentions yada yada and that they have complete faith that the department did no wrong yada yada and that the commissioner need not resign yada yada so they rejected his offer.
