The thing about negotiations is the radical "know nothing but opposition" elements have to be abandoned in search of diplomatic solutions, because they offer nothing but obstruction.

Bibi made his point of view irrelevant when he chose the path of radicalism. No one forced him to do that.

You can bet dollars to doughnuts the house of Saud and Netanyahu are burning up the phone lines on this one.

I personally think the Saudis will give the Israelis overflight of the Kingdom for an attack on Iran.

1) Israel simply lacks the capability to do any real harm to Iran, militarily. even if it dropped nukes (an idea which i hope even the current regime isn't crazy enough to try) it wouldn't do a whole lot in the scheme of things.

2) Such an effort by Israel would result in many dead Israeli pilots. Probably not a great concern for Netanyahu, but sacrificing Israeli pilots for no real gain against Iran is count to burn his ass at home.

3) Such an attack - especially if i'm wrong and it's nuclear - would be ruinous for Israel, politically; and perhaps militarily. The rest of the world would fully step away from Israel - even the united States. And you can bet Israel's neighbors would have something to say... and this isn't 1948 anymore.

4) Iran is as unable to hurt Israel as Israel is to hurt Iran. iran would likely mobilize its allied militias (Hezbollah and Islamic jihad) - or they might go out on their own anyway. But Iran will not itself move militarily. It would cast itself (correctly) as a victim of Israeli aggression on the eve of a peace deal. More damage for Israel's relations. Even China, famously not-giving-a-shit about hte whole situation, would likely find cause to back out at this point, if only to keep its own assets secure.

5) meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has to deal with a sudden uprising. The Arabian people aren't really happy about the regime housing Americans on Saudi soil already, or going to war with other Muslims (even if they are Shia heretics.) But the idea of the Saudi government letting Israeli fighters use Saudi airspace to attack another Muslim nation? The House of Saud would have hell to pay from their own people.

The fallout would basically be a disaster for Israel and Saudi Arabia. Even if it shot back, Iran would come out smelling like a tulip.

however there's also the fact that neither the Israelis nor saudis are known for sound decision-making or, you know.. .sanity. After all they both have a superpower holding their hands the whole way, and can't fathom life otherwise.

They do not have the capabilities to strike that deep. Between Tehran and Jerusalem there is about 1000 miles in a straight line.

The range for a F16 is around 1800 miles without any bombs. With extra fuel tanks you can get to 2400 or so. However, in combat configuration with bombs, it is way less. Something around 500 miles which is pretty much what they did when they struck a reactor near bagdad in 1981 and another one in Syria in 2007.

Unless the US refuels them in flight or via an aircraft carrier, they can not do it.
