Russian atomic submarine catches fire in shipyard - Russian media

Source: Reuters

A Russian nuclear submarine has caught fire in a shipyard in Russia's northern province of Arkhangelsk, Russian news agencies reported on Tuesday.

Both the Zvyozdochka shipyard, where wires said the 949 Antei submarine was being repaired, and the Emergencies Ministry declined to comment.

There was no word of any casualties.

Russian news agency Interfax cited a separate source as saying there were no weapons onboard the submarine and other news agencies said the fire had started during welding, causing insulation materials to catch fire.

OSCAR class SSGN submarine, early-mid 1980's build, as big as an SSBN submarine but instead fires great swathes of cruise missiles (conventional and nuclear), designed and operated to attack USN carrier battle groups as they steam up the Norwegoian coast on their way to reduce the Russian BEAR/BACKFIRE/BLACKJACK fleet to smoking holes in the ground.

they recieved prioritised funding over pretty much all but the newest SSN's after the fall of the SU, they are one of the few bits of the Russian Navy that work. assuming they work...

Maybe they had a lazy contractor like we did who wanted to cut out of work early one day and set a little fire on the USS Miami. He only did $700 million in damages resulting in the scrapping of a perfectly good atomic sub. I believe he is doing 17 years in prison for that caper.
