Wisconsin Bans Staff Of Public Lands Board From Talking About Climate Change

TREES WISCONSIN
According to Wisconsin's Board of Commissioners of Public Lands, working on climate change, or even just talking about it while at work, is a waste of public funds.
On Tuesday, the board voted 2-to-1 to prohibit staff "from engaging in global warming or climate change work" while on the clock at the Board of Commissioners.
The move comes as Republicans on the board expressed outrage that the board's executive director, Tia Nelson, had served on a state global warming task force in 2007 and 2008, which was organized by former Gov. Jim Doyle (D).
La Follette, the only vote against the measure, said Republicans are trying to "gag employees" on climate change. He also accused [Rep.] Adamczyk of having personal motivations on the subject.
"Part of it is he hates environmental people," La Follette told the Wisconsin State Journal. "And that includes me."...........

State board bans workers from discussing global warming
By Todd Richmond, Associated Press

.....She [Tia Nelson] told Adamcyzk during Tuesday's meeting that none of the previous commissioners had a problem with her serving on the task force and she didn't think serving at a governor's request would be objectionable, according to audio recordings of the proceedings.
She hasn't actively worked on global warming since the task force disbanded seven years ago, she said. She added that she typically works as long as she must to complete her board responsibilities, including evenings and weekends.
"I have never lobbied on climate change on state time in the entire 10 years I've been at the board of commissioners," she said.
Adamcyzk responded that he doesn't want employees spending board time at five-hour meetings in the future. He said if Nelson were to receive any questions or emails about global warming, she should refer them to the commissioners.........
According to board meeting minutes, Adamcyzk called for a vote to fire Nelson in early March. He accused her of "time theft" for attending task force meetings on board time, specifically pointing to a day she spent in Washington, D.C., in 2009 testifying on global warming before a House subcommittee on energy and the environment......
Nelson said during Tuesday's meeting that she spent only about two hours testifying on global warming in Washington and spent the rest of her 12-hour day in the city on board business.

(1,606 posts)So, FIGHT. Stand up! Did Selma teach anyone anything?
This "poor me" lamentation over harsh right-wing bullying (and that's all it is) is tiresome.
FIGHT, for fuck's sake! Stand up, speak out, and make yourself and this nonsensical attempt at muzzling an ISSUE.
RISE UP, fight the power, and be the change that you can be.
Pissing an moaning while rolling over as bullies seek to muzzle truth is a losing proposition...and frankly I am growing awfully damn tired of such a spineless and wimpy response which has become all too routine on the left.
It's time to confront and resist. NONVIOLENT, ACTIVE RESISTANCE. Remember?
Stop the pissing and moaning up there in Wisconsin and show some goddamned fight. Get serious. Civil disobedience works.

(36,063 posts)Gender orientation is a personal and immediately intimate issue, climate change denial impacts individuals, but the individual impacts are not immediate and aren't intimately targeted.
People who are LGBT and people who are their family, friends, co-workers, are distributed through every aspect of society. When a state passes a law to allow pizzeria or bakery refuses service on the basis of gender orientation people all across society understand what that means in a very personal way.
People who want to stop fossil fuel use or prevent the privatization of WI aquifers are better categorized, and the category can be cubby-holed and treated as a 'special interest', which have to have fewer friends and much clearer opponents.
This action by the Public Land Commissioners is as the commissioners says...about profitable land use. Issues of public land use that impact air or water resources in general ways is outside of what the majority of the commissioners want to deal with...which is promoting sand mining for frac'ing, promoting mineral extraction generally, and setting up the state to sell its aquifers to Nestles or other persons interested in owning and controlling water resources.
No one is going to boycott Miller beer, jelly-bellies, or Brewers games, or Wisconsin casinos because of banning of climate change as a valid considerations of the staff of the Public Lands Commission because the link between that policy and the harm isn't immediately seen. Moreover, unlike the right to discriminate against LGBT, it isn't targeted against important family members, admired co-workers or friends it's targeted at unknown staff buried in the state bureaucracy.
It's a bad policy for the future, no doubt, but it's very unlikely to result in a firestorm of protest from across the nation focused on WI

....."The move to ban an issue leaves staff at the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands in the unusual position of not being able to speak about how climate change might affect lands it oversees," writes Bloomberg reporter Eric Roston.
Roston cites a U.S. National Climate Assessment that states that climate change could threaten forests in the Midwest, where the temperature has risen an average of 1.5 degrees from 1895 to 2012. Warming temperatures could cause a decline in several species of trees, according to the report. Another government report Roston cites, from the Environmental Protection Agency, says that climate change threats include droughts, wildfires and the proliferation of harmful insects, such as the gypsy moth.
While Adamczyk and Schimel are new to the board and voted for the measure, La Follette, who voted against the climate change ban, has been on the board for nearly 30 years.
Having been on this board for close to 30 years, Ive never seen such nonsense, he said in the conference call on Tuesday, according to Bloomberg. Weve reached the point now where were going to try to gag employees from talking about issues. In this case, climate change. Thats as bad as the governor of Florida recently telling his staff that they could not use the words climate change.
He was referring to a report last month by the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting that found that Florida Department of Environmental Protection officials "have been ordered not to use the term 'climate change' or 'global warming' in any official communications, emails, or reports."
The Bloomberg report quoted Adamczyk as saying, in response to a question regarding what Nelson should do if she receives an email concerning climate change, she can forward it to us and we can all look at it. I would prefer that we didnt have to prohibit stuff like this. It just seems silly that we would have to. But Im not the one thats been engaging on this topic for years.
