On April 15, fast-food workers in more than 200 U.S. cities, including Asheville, will march in what some say will be the most widespread mobilization ever by U.S. workers seeking higher pay.
The nationwide strikes and protests, part of the Fight for $15 movement, will come two weeks after McDonald's announced it was increasing salaries for a fraction of its workforce by $1. But rather than mollifying employees, the move, which some say is not enough, has inspired even more workers to join the walkout.
According to a recent report by the UC Berkeley Labor Center, more than 52 percent of fast-food workers rely on public assistance to get by.
That means the majority of fast-food workers must use a piece of the roughly $150 billion a year the government spends annually on antipoverty programs, such as Medicaid and SNAP benefits.
