Prominent Catholics call on pope to oust S.F. archbishop
Source: San Francisco Chronicle
In an unprecedented move, more than 100 prominent Roman Catholic donors and church members signed a full-page ad running Thursday in The Chronicle that calls on Pope Francis to replace San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone for fostering an atmosphere of division and intolerance.
The plea follows months of dissent within the archdiocese over Cordileones emphasis on traditional, conservative church doctrine including asking high school teachers and staffers at Catholic schools to sign a morality clause that characterizes sex outside of marriage and homosexual relations as gravely evil.
In their open letter to the pope, Cordileones critics say his morality-clause push is mean-spirited and sets a pastoral tone that is closer to persecution than evangelization.
The ad drew swift condemnation from the archdiocese, which said those who signed it dont speak for San Franciscos Catholic community.

(24,010 posts)I know this from hard experience. But I doubt that Pope Francis will change the tyrannical, monarchical structure of the Roman Catholic Church by ousting a sex-obsessed bishop of the "old school" even if tens of thousands of parishioners signed the petition. At least not any time soon. Francis may be a more listening sort of man than most popes have been, more open to dissenting voices and more compassionate--his gestures in these regards have been dramatic and convincing as to his personal views--but the monarchical "system" is so entrenched and has been so wrong for so long that it won't be easily changed. The sex-obsessed male tyrants will fight back--are fighting back--to maintain their self-worship.
To rant and rave against "sex outside of marriage" and against homosexuals--even while denying marriage to homosexuals! (what hypocrisy!)--as "gravely evil," while our government drone-kills thousands of innocents and recently killed one million people in an entirely unnecessary war, as well as torturing prisoners, causing vast social chaos and dislocation in the Middle East and North Africa, supporting hideous regimes like Saudi Arabia, and so many other atrocities--including the imprisonment rate here (worst in the world!), the hideous conditions of our prisons, the murder of young black men by the police, and so many other true evils--is typical of this sort of cleric who wants to rule other peoples' sex lives while true horrible evils abound wherever you look. It's sickening. The man should be removed--but I really don't think he will be.

(50,566 posts)These "good" Catholics object to "division and intolerance" but are fine with supporting a church that embraces misogyny and homophobia at its very core. What a sick joke!

They should put him down in Shady Creek, Utah or Bums' Alley, Louisiana, not in San Francisco. He is definitely not in the right archdiocese, or even parish.
That is very funny.
