Tennessee House approves bill to make Bible official state book

Source: Yahoo! News / Reuters

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Reuters) - Tennessee state legislators on Wednesday advanced a bill to make the Bible the official state book, a measure the state attorney general said would be unconstitutional and Republican Governor Bill Haslam has called disrespectful.

The Republican-controlled state House of Representatives voted 55-38 to approve the Bible as state book. A companion bill could be considered as soon as Thursday in the state Senate, where Republicans hold 28 seats to five for Democrats.

Representative Bud Hulsey, a Republican, told colleagues in support of the bill it is worth the fight "now more than ever."

because James I of England (and VI of Scotland) was a homosexual and they don't want to be sullied by that fact.

There are two schools of thought on this one.

The KJV Only people will tell you James' wife and children, which he undisputably had, were proof he couldn't have been gay. They will condemn you to hell for even thinking James was anything but 100 percent heterosexual.

The rest of us know the most important job any king has is to produce the next king; therefore, James essentially closed his eyes and thought of England when he was performing what to him must have been the most repulsive act of his reign.

I have a wonderful friend in Corvallis which Wiki lists as the least religious. Portland, being filled with almost the same percentage of us heathens, would be better for me since I like larger cities.

Unfortunately, my hubs is insisting we move back to those beautiful tn mountains. I'll just have wear ear plugs and ignore the idiots.

With these people (religious right-wing nut jobs), one always must look at the long game being played. This move isn't simply a public gesture of respect for a religious work, it is in fact, the first step in promoting the bible to be taught in public schools, a long-held mission of the religious freaks.

And I agree with a previous post -- exactly WHICH version of the bible are they attempting to shove down everyone's throats? There are dozens. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_Bible_translations for a list of just the ones in English.

The Bible will not become the official book of Tennessee this year.

Bolstered by opposition from Republican leadership, the Senate voted 22-9 to send the Bible to committee, effectively killing the bill a day after it was adopted by the House.

"This isn't the time or place now in the full Senate floor to delve into that. We really need to look into it in committee," Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris, R-Collierville, said about two hours before the vote.

Gov. Bill Haslam and Attorney General Herbert Slatery oppose the bill; Slatery recently announced he thinks the bill violates the state and federal constitutions.
