Jason Kenney says Canadian soldiers will not be training Nazi sympathizers in Ukraine
Source: National Post
The Canadian government is confident that troops from Petawawa wont end up instructing Neo Nazis and far right extremists when they begin their training mission in Ukraine this summer, but a former diplomat is warning it will be difficult to weed out such extremists as their militia units are now being integrated into Ukraines regular forces.
Some members of Ukraines most effective fighting units have openly acknowledged they are Nazi sympathizers or have expressed anti-Semitic or extreme right wing views.

But former Canadian diplomat James Bissett says the Canadians could end up training members of the countrys fascist groups as those troops are now being enrolled in Ukraines regular forces. These militias are being merged with Ukraines military so we wont be able to determine who we are training, said Bissett, Canadas former ambassador to Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Albania. These are unsavoury groups that Canadian soldiers should not be associated with.
Ukraines defence ministry recently announced that Dmitri Yarosh, the head of the Right Sector party, will become an advisor to the countrys military chief. Members of the Ukrainian Volunteer Corps, a militia created by the far right group, will be integrated into the regular military.

Well worth reading in it's entirety. The Canadian Defense Minister's promise they won't be training Nazi sympathizers seems a little like wishful thinking given the circumstances.

From the link:
Voldsdeutsches were people whose language and culture had German origins but who did not hold German citizenship.
I wonder to what extent the current Nazi movement in Ukraine is influenced by "Volksdeutsches."

(6,171 posts)A lot of the Ukrainian nationalism has been connected to fascism, at least historically. Nowadays the major promoter of fascism in Eastern Europe is Russia.

(3,714 posts)No, of course you don't. Maybe you need to study up on what fascism really is.
Do you even understand that Ukraine and Russia were the same country from the 1650's to the 1990's?

(6,171 posts)The Ukranians are not Russians, even though they have been under Russian and later Soviet control. Their connection to Russia was never voluntary, just like with every other people in the vicinity of Russia. Ask any Ukrainian if they are Russian, and they will give you a knuckle sandwich.
Thanks to Yeltsin they gained their independence, and thanks to Putin they are losing it.
And yes, Putin is a fascist, and Russia is on a very dangerous path. Just read the Russian news in English, and look at pro-Russian websites. It's all propaganda.

(6,171 posts)Ukraine has a problem with right wing nationalism, and if it wasn't for Russia acting like Germany in the thirties, that would have to be addressed.
Basically, first the free world will force Russia to give Crimea back, then we'll deal with Ukraine's internal problems.

(36,988 posts)The Crimea talk is over and has been and its not gonna happen and you want to USE FORCE to do this even the europeans don't care about that. ?

(247 posts)You denigrate Putin and glorify Yeltsin, but they were both equally opposed to N.A.T.O. expansion into Eastern Europe, which is the larger cause of all this stuff in Ukraine, and earlier in Georgia.
Also, it was the West's support for Yeltsin in his show down with the democratically-elected (and Communist dominated) Duma that rendered helped the Duma powerless and made Putin's quasi-dictatorship possible.
Also, please tell me where these pro-russian websites are. I'd like to check them out. This NP piece is rare for even admitting Fascism is a problem. As far as I can tell, the NY Times and most of the major U.S. outlets are simply rewriting the briefings they get from N.A.T.O. and the Kiev Government.

(6,171 posts)The thing is that the OP is trying to connect Ukraine to fascism, while it's Russia that's actually promoting fascism, and it's Russia that's the aggressor in Ukraine. You can't successfully argue against that, which you haven't.
I think we have moved full circle, and my arguments are exhausted. Fire away, I give you the last word.
