Lawmakers who led GWB scandal probe call criminal findings 'sickening'

State House Bureau | The Record

The two state lawmakers leading the legislative inquiry into the George Washington Bridge lane closures said it was "sickening" to hear in federal court on Friday that former members of the Port Authority and Governor Christie's office orchestrated widespread traffic jams during the first week of school in 2013.

David Wildstein, appointed by Christie to a top position in the Port Authority, made the revelation that the four-day traffic jam was designed by closing access lanes to the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee. Wildstein pleaded guilty to two charges in the case in federal court in Newark.

Wildstein acknowledged in court that the lanes were closed as a form of punishment of Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich for not endorsing the re-election of Christie, and in doing so he implicated former Christie chief of staff Bridget Ann Kelly and former Port Authority Deputy executive director Bill Baroni. But the timing of the closures - from Sept. 9 to Sept. 13 - were designed to have a wide and painful impact on school children, as it was the opening week of the school year, Wildstein said.

"It was sickening to know that there were people who were in jobs - people with great responsibility - that chose, as we suspected, the first day of school - and, may I add it was also the week of Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, and it was the week of Sept. 11 observances - that that day was purposely chosen to punish residents of the state of New Jersey for the lack of their mayor endorsing this governor," said Sen. Loretta Weinberg, who represents Fort Lee and co-chairs the investigative panel.

This is FAR from over. This may re-ignite the legislative and Federal investigations. Misconduct in the The Port Authority, being a bi-state agency, falls under Federal laws and regulations.

Wisniewski, said this:

"What's also wrong is the admission here that the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs - part of the governor's office - was engaged in seeking political endorsements for the governor's re-election campaign. These are very troubling admissions. There's more to come for our committee."

Once one domino falls (Wildstein), they all fall, and this will mushroom into a full Watergate-like scandal.

since it was named early on as one of the key targets for terrorists. Christie's excuse about being out of the loop was that the bridge closing was unimportant for a governor and didn't rise to any level of interest. Really? Even on Sept 11, eh, Chris? And you think you're a strong 'leader', eh Chris? The corporate media didn't think to call you out on this, so you lucked out, didntcha Chris?

To pull this stunt, not only the first week of school, but, on Sept 11, on a bridge already deemed as a key target for terrorism.

That is a SPECIAL kind of evil. and stupid.

I am sure this is only the tip of the iceberg...meanwhile - AZ "meanest sheriff in town" has his own Federal probe..and it don't look pretty for the "only sheriff" in town to don pink underwear in his very own tent city - that is of course, if the Federal system has a tent city....

…directly, then it still means he had a group of "rogue" top advisors whom he couldn't control and was too stupid to know about. If he can't manage the 5 or so people directly under him, how will he run the country, foreign affairs, the military?

So out of this he'll emerge as either utterly corrupt or hopelessly incompetent. A great example of Republican ability.

a. Christie knew and at least tacitly (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) endorsed this action or

b. Christie knew nothing but there is some weird sort of personality cult that would embolden officials to do things that they feel would please their idol.

My limited reading on this is that Wildstein is probably getting a somewhat reduced sentence as long as he fingers the rest of the culprits.

Of course, there are plenty of ways to dispose of cooperative witnesses in NJ...

With 20 or more years in the slammer looming, I doubt they'll keep quiet, especially since there could be several more people involved.

Also, this is what the prosecutor said this morning:

"He also said he would not comment on any other ongoing investigations related to the Port Authority."
