One In 15 Students Have Chlamydia At An “Abstinence-Only” High School In Texas

Texas state law requires an emphasis on abstinence over any other form of prevention in sexual education classes.

Crane Public Schools in West Texas sent out a letter to high school and junior high parents last Friday regarding 20 confirmed cases of chlamydia among its 300 students.

So far only high school students have reportedly been affected; the letters were sent to junior high parents preventatively.

The letter began with “Crane Independent School District would like to make our parents aware … of a problem that has been identified in our teenagers…” but was otherwise a brief sexual education pamphlet about Chlamydia.

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease that is on the rise. Several cases have been reported. It is a reportable disease that is mandatory to report … The number of cases reported from Crane and Upton County have been significant.

we didn't teach them how.

I wonder if the parents know how to prevent spread of Chlamydia.

It's the only bona fide town in Crane County, although there's also an unincorporated settlement or two out there as well. This is deep in the heart of oil country.

Back in the early 60s, Gilmer was probably as big as Crane is today. Dad told me the thing to do on a Saturday night in Gilmer was to hang out around the local Dairy Queen. You didn't necessarily go in to grab some food; you just drove around the building and killed time with your friends. Last I heard, that Dairy Queen is still there after all these years, though Gilmer has grown a little bit.

So yeah, you're probably right.

there was nothing to do when she was a teenager but "drink and screw". Guess things haven't changed that much.

when parents let 'leaders' like this make antiquated, archaic, obsolete decisions concerning a person's life choices. You can't legislate hormones. These type of american 'decision makers' are worse than any extreme religionist from any religion or religious government AROUND THE WORLD. Reality says: educate about the dangers and use prevention, not abstinence bullshit.

Are the kids required to give a specimen? Chlamydia and Gonorrhea can be detected in a urine specimen, so women don't have to undergo a pelvic examination.

Our lab does many of these tests on a daily basis. There is a lot of STD's out there....
