Putin Takes Swipe at U.S. in Massive Red Square Military Parade
Source: NBC News
Thousands of Russian troops marched across Red Square, tanks rumbled through the streets and jets screamed overhead on Saturday in a huge military parade marking the 70th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany.
Western leaders boycotted the parade over Russia's role in the Ukraine crisis but President Vladimir Putin was joined under the Kremlin's walls by about 30 foreign leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, sitting on his right-hand side.
In a sign of closer ties between Russia and China, a column of Chinese troops took part in the events. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was also among those watching.

Putin has used the anniversary to whip up patriotism and fuel anti-Western sentiment, warning that fascism could be on the rise again and suggesting other countries are rewriting history to play down Moscow's role in winning the war.

(10,575 posts)More than 2,200 inmates have been released as part of an amnesty proclaimed in the honor of the 70th anniversary of the Allied Victory in World War II, Interfax news agency reported Thursday, citing Russia's Federal Penitentiary Service.
Valery Maksimenko, acting deputy head of the prison system, told reporters that 2,236 convicts had walked free under the amnesty as of Wednesday, Interfax reported.
Up to 60,000 inmates could be released from prison under the amnesty, which will span a six-month period, Maksimenko added.
As many as 400,000 people including inmates, individuals with suspended sentences and those currently standing trial could benefit from the amnesty, which was approved by federal lawmakers late last month.

Do you know what NGOs are going through in Russia?
Foreign NGOs are placed under heightened scrutiny and the organization of mothers of russian soldiers was attacked and bad-mouthed for saying that russian soldiers are fighting in Ukraine.
EDIT:
Also, good luck finding an independent media-outlet. Only small ones are left and even they are disappearing bit by bit.

The majority of Russians are more that happy with Putin, who has been able to impose some measure control over the oligarchs and organised crime. Most notably, perhaps, he put a stop to the plundering of the country by the multinationals of the degenerate West, who will never forgive him. Did you see the West's childish response to Putin's invitation to join the V-E Day celebration in Russia.
I suppose Russia's principal role in defeating the Nazis is not something the West wants it peoples to be reminded of, particularly after telling them that they won the war; in the UK, with a little help from the US and some kind of role by Russia; and the same in the US, mutatis mutandis. Particularly reluctant to do so, when they are busily demonising Russia over the Ukraine - having funded pro-US fascists to usurp the government. Well, the West had been very, very fascistic in the twenties and had helped prop up the Nazi regime right up until 1938, when they could still have stopped the Nazis in their tracks. But they were too good for stock-market.

(16,423 posts)The Russians are so happy with Putin that his reelection a few years ago led to an abrupt increase of emigration from less than 20,000 per year to more than 100,000 per year.
About 20% of Russians with higher education would prefer to leave Russia.
Rich investors are relocating their families to outside of Russia, mainly London. Artists and scientists are leaving for good.
Putin's Russia must clearly be a marvelous wonderland.

(5,069 posts)We embellish military culture at least 3 times a year - Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Veterans Day - November 11 which was taken from Armistice Day and WWI.
The Russians have been invaded on 3 occasions, the latter of which was WWII and lost over 20 million people. This is compared to the US which has never fought a war (other than the Civil War) on its soil and lost less than 500,000 in WWII.
They have every right to celebrate - the D-Day that the US takes credit for would not have happened w/o the USSR first defeating the German Army. To quote from an online UK history source, "The Battle of Stalingrad is considered by many historians to have been the turning point in World War Two in Europe. The battle at Stalingrad bled the German army dry in Russia and after this defeat, the Germany Army was in full retreat. "

(37,449 posts)their territory. The non-aggression treaty he signed gave him a chance to build up his military.
On August 22, 1939, German foreign minister Joachim von Ribbentrop (1893-1946) flew from Berlin to Moscow. He was soon inside the Kremlin, face-to-face with Stalin and Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov (1890-1986), who had been working with von Ribbentrop to negotiate an agreement. Ribbentrop carried a proposal from Hitler that both countries commit to a nonaggression pact that would last 100 years. Stalin replied that 10 years would be sufficient. The proposal also stipulated that neither country would aid any third party that attacked either signatory. Finally, the proposal contained a secret protocol specifying the spheres of influence in Eastern Europe both parties would accept after Hitler conquered Poland. The Soviet Union would acquire the eastern half of Poland, along with Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia.
Of course once the double-cross was in Stalin started begging for aid. He got Lend-Lease from the US which allowed him to later go on the offensive against Hitler. Hitlers big mistake was not taking Moscow, instead he relied on his elaborate plans the hyperextend his army.
A good portion of the people killed in Russia were of Stalin's own doing especially the army, some new revise estimates go to 60 million including the army in the course of Stalin's reign.

26.6 million Soviet dead (soldiers and civilians) - Some researchers put the figure at 40 million Soviet dead
14 million dead and missing Soviet military servicemen and women.
If the Russians didn't have a parade to commemorate their WWII dead, NBC would think up a headline about how uncivilized and barbaric they are. Because they had a parade, well, it's a provocation against the USA.
I don't appreciate the spin, and the assumption that we Americans are too stupid to notice anything.
on edit: In the video, President Putin THANKS the Western Allies in his speech for their role in the victory over Nazism (USA & Canada, France, UK, and other nations). More NBC bullshit comes to light...
