...Nothing gives me a grudging respect for someone I usually hate than reading a poorly written hit piece which is directed against them. I don't know why this is, but suspect that part of the reason is that I've always felt that a man with the right enemies can't be all bad.
This axiom apparently applies even to Bernie Sanders who, based on this ridiculous hit piece at Slate.com, appears to actually have his head in the right place in at least one instance:
...
In this article, a Slate writer proves that he doesn't understand how tort law works. What is actually happening here is that Bernie Sanders voted for a tremendously important and intelligent bill which was meant to correct a problem - namely that anti-gun activists were abusing the court system by hurling law suits at gun companies whenever their guns were used in the commission of a crime. The problem with this should be obvious to anyone who understands the issues. You cannot sue someone for selling a legal item which works as advertised and is not defective merely because that item is used in a bad fashion.
...
He didn't support a stupid law that would have held people to a liability they had no hand in, and opposed opposed paying bank$ter/donors money while letting millions of working people fall into poverty. Seems like good sense to me, to work for laws that actually provide justice and accomplish something useful.
That's the one I would vote for.

Slate comes up with some sludge every so often. They are owned by Amazon. Amazon will see their gun sales drop if Sanders is elected, that's why they had their folks write this.

The lawyer says Zimmerman told him the other driver drove along side his client and fired into the driver's side window.
The lawyer says Zimmerman was not struck by a bullet, but rather shattering glass.

You would think he'd have been smart enough to simply lay low and stay out of the public eye and consider that he's free to walk around rather than stuck in a jail cell.
He hasn't been able to do that. He's either a psychopath or else he's one stupid SOB. Probably both.

(708 posts)The problem is that I'm having a hard time buying that this guy Apperson saw Zimmerman waving a gun at him in a moving car through limo tint.
ecstatic
(32,701 posts)that GZ was stalking and harassing him (GZ showed up at Apperson's job after a road rage incident). Fast forward to yesterday, GZ supposedly comes to town for mothers day and happens to run into Apperson again? Really? He's clearly stalking Apperson--unless the town is comprised of 2 people. Apperson was likely scared for his life, although the whole thing just makes me think even less of Florida. Apparently road rage / shootouts are OK (even though I'm not mad at all about who the target was, lol).
I'm still kinda skeptical about this. According to the police report from the "second incident" (for lack of a better description), police verified that Zimmerman did indeed have a valid doctor's appointment at the location, and from what I can find, there was no actual evidence of the first "road rage incident" ever happening in the first place. From what I can tell, it's "he said, he said" at best, and Apperson elected not to pursue the case. And then he continued to not pursue the case after the "second incident." Makes me wonder, at the bare minimum, about the credibility of Apperson.
I'm not about to run out and defend Zimmerman as some sort of hero or victim or something like that. Dude has problems. There's no doubt about that.
But in THIS case, I'm having a hard time believing Apperson's version of events. I'm not seeing (literally, in this case) how he could have seen Zimmerman pointing a gun at him, from the left lane of a two-lane major divided thoroughfare, in a moving car, with very dark-tinted windows, when Apperson could have easily just turned right at the previous light and evaded Zimmerman entirely. His only choice was to try for a head shot from a much lower-riding vehicle, while in motion, in traffic, through a window, and missed a head shot from less than ten feet away?
Apperson's story is straining credulity at the very best. Particularly given his behavior today outside the police station.
I think what we have here is a case of "when a crazy meets a crazy comin' through the rye." And it's looking to me like Apperson is slightly more crazy here, at least based upon the evidence that I'm presently seeing. Emphasis on evidence.

(708 posts)I suppose it's possible that he rolled his window down, waved a gun around, and then rolled it back up again, but if that's the case, then the immediate threat necessitating lethal force self defense disappears for Apperson.

From this story, Zimmerman was armed, waved (brandished) his pistol, other individual puts a bullet through Zimmerman's windshield. First article I've seen that states that Zimmerman had his gun out.
His life appears to have become one long bad action film. Maybe He should be in the next Fast & Furious flim!

(160,527 posts)Latest Zimmerman dust-up linked to prior road rage incident
By KYLE HIGHTOWER and MIKE SCHNEIDER, Associated Press | May 11, 2015 | Updated: May 11, 2015 3:59pm
LAKE MARY, Fla. (AP) The man who called 911 to report he was involved in a shooting with George Zimmerman appears to be the same person involved in a road rage incident with the former neighborhood watch volunteer last year.
Lake Mary Police Officer Bianca Gillett said during a news conference Monday that Matthew Apperson called 911 to report the shooting. She said Zimmerman was not the shooter and investigators hadn't determined yet if any charges will be filed. Both Zimmerman and Apperson have yet to be interviewed formally by investigators, she said.
. . .
A woman who answered the phone at the disability-benefits business where Apperson works asked a reporter never to call again. Nobody answered the door at his Winter Springs condominium, where there is a "for sale" out front and a lock box on the door.
Last September, Apperson said Zimmerman threatened to kill him, asking "Do you know who I am?" during a confrontation in their vehicles. Apperson decided not to pursue charges, and police officers were unable to move forward without a car tag identified or witnesses.

(9,069 posts)People Control, Not Gun Control
This is my generic response to gun threads where people are shot and killed by the dumb or criminal possession of guns. For the record, I grew up in the South and on military bases. I was taught about firearms as a child, and I grew up hunting, was a member of the NRA, and I still own guns. In the 70s, I dropped out of the NRA because they become more radical and less interested in safety and training. Some personal experiences where people I know were involved in shootings caused me to realize that anyone could obtain and posses a gun no matter how illogical it was for them to have a gun. Also, easy access to more powerful guns, guns in the hands of children, and guns that werent secured are out of control in our society. As such, heres what I now think ought to be the requirements to possess a gun. Im not debating the legal language, I just think its the reasonable way to stop the shootings. Notice, none of this restricts the type of guns sold. This is aimed at the people who shoot others, because its clear that they should never have had a gun.
1.) Anyone in possession of a gun (whether they own it or not) should have a regularly renewed license. If you want to call it a permit, certificate, or something else that's fine.
2.) To get a license, you should have a background check, and be examined by a professional for emotional and mental stability appropriate for gun possession. It might be appropriate to require that examination to be accompanied by references from family, friends, employers, etc. This check is not to subject you to a mental health diagnosis, just check on your superficial and apparent gun-worthyness.
3.) To get the license, you should be required to take a safety course and pass a test appropriate to the type of gun you want to use.
4.) To get a license, you should be over 21. Under 21, you could only use a gun under direct supervision of a licensed person and after obtaining a learners license. Your license might be restricted if you have children or criminals or other unsafe people living in your home. (If you want to argue 18 or 25 or some other age, fine. 21 makes sense to me.)
5.) If you possess a gun, you would have to carry a liability insurance policy specifically for gun ownership - and likely you would have to provide proof of appropriate storage, security, and whatever statistical reasons that emerge that would drive the costs and ability to get insurance.
6.) You could not purchase a gun or ammunition without a license, and purchases would have a waiting period.
7.) If you possess a gun without a license, you go to jail, the gun is impounded, and a judge will have to let you go (just like a DUI).
8.) No one should carry an unsecured gun (except in a locked case, unloaded) when outside of home. Guns should be secure when transporting to a shooting event without demonstrating a special need. Their license should indicate training and special carry circumstances beyond recreational shooting (security guard, etc.). If you are carrying your gun while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, you lose your gun and license.
9.) If you buy, sell, give away, or inherit a gun, your license information should be recorded.
10.) If you accidentally discharge your gun, commit a crime, get referred by a mental health professional, are served a restraining order, etc., you should lose your license and guns until reinstated by a serious relicensing process.
Most of you know that a license is no big deal. Besides a drivers license you need a license to fish, operate a boat, or many other activities. I realize these differ by state, but that is not a reason to let anyone without a bit of sense pack a semiautomatic weapon in public, on the roads, and in schools. I think we need to make it much harder for some people to have guns.
