Debate over driver's licenses for 'Dreamers' grows testy; 1 lawmaker uses term that is 'disgusting'

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Joe Duggan

LINCOLN — An effort to thwart a bill that would allow driver’s licenses for young immigrants who arrived in the country illegally as children prompted a testy debate Wednesday in the Nebraska Legislature.

Senators who want Nebraska to continue denying driver’s licenses to the special category of immigrants spent more than six hours filibustering a bill that would repeal the policy. A solid majority of the 49 senators have already signed on to Legislative Bill 623.

Once debate hits the eight-hour mark Thursday, supporters will have a chance to end the filibuster. Sen. Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha, who introduced the measure, said he is confident supporters will have the 33 votes needed to cut off debate and advance the bill to the second round.

Opponents have an ally in Gov. Pete Ricketts, who opposes giving state benefits to illegal immigrants. The governor has not yet said whether he would veto the bill, which has the support of many Republican senators as well as business and agriculture groups.

Xenophobia, racism, inequality, misogyny, insensitivity, hyperreligiosity, bravado and exploitation are republican true colors.

They are actually not too far off from ISIS.

When I was in Korea for 3 years, I was not Korean but was still able to get a drivers license. I don't see why anyone who can pass the test not get one. Very weird.

Even in the US, people with student, B1, H1-B, L1 visas can get a driver's license.

When one is undocumented is when the problem arises.

"Disgusting" is not the word I'd use to describe Kintner.

In response, Kintner stuck by his decision to use the historically accurate name of the program, especially since “I gave a disclaimer to keep the liberals happy.”
