4 (state) senators leave council, citing 'extreme' agenda (ALEC)

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Paul Hammel

LINCOLN — Four Nebraska lawmakers have withdrawn from a national organization of legislators, saying the American Legislative Exchange Council has become extreme in its politics and strayed from its origins of promoting business-friendly policies.

State Sen. Heath Mello of Omaha, one of the four, said he joined ALEC at the urging of fellow senators who portrayed it as a “right-of-center” organization that promoted government transparency.

“They've become very extreme on a lot of issues,” Mello said, citing its pro-coal agenda for America's energy future and opposition to President Barack Obama's health care law. “I don't want to be used as a political pawn.”

But a national spokesman for ALEC and a state senator who is its Nebraska chairman portrayed the recent requests to cancel memberships as an orchestrated campaign to discredit the group during an election year.

FULL story at link.

As I have said before, why bother?

The legislation was written, has been implemented in many states, and the damage has been done. Only thing left is to be forced to spend countless hours and large sums of money litigating these draconian laws to get them overturned.

Don't get a false sense of security. Sen. Abbie Cornett (former ALEC chair for the state) introduced a bill to remove the state's estate taxes which would greatly impoverish Omaha, or raise property taxes for the poorest home owners.

Cornett is also the Chairperson on the Unicameral's Revenue Committee, and she's going around talking to progressive groups:
