Exclusive: China warns U.S. surveillance plane

Source: CNN

Above the South China Sea (CNN)The Chinese navy issued warnings eight times as a U.S. surveillance plane on Wednesday swooped over islands that Beijing is using to extend its zone of influence.

Seeking to further challenge China's military build-up in the South China Sea, the plane conducted a reconnaissance mission over a contested military installation being constructed on a manmade series of islands.

A CNN team was given exclusive access to fly onboard the P8-A Poseidon, America's most advanced surveillance and submarine-hunting aircraft, as it flew over the islands.

Exclusive: China warns U.S. surveillance plane

Very creative of the Chinese to make their own islands to seize control of the region. They are going to be a worsening problem.

I wonder what will happen when they shoot one of our planes down...

they don't have much of a Navy, and we aren't stupid enough to get in a land war with them over there, and they can't get over here. Regardless, nothing is going to happen. We are their largest customer.

Just stating that China may be vocal about this, but there isn't much they can do militarily about it- at least not in the foreseeable future.

B) China is not going to war with the US.

C) The point geek was trying to make is China's naval and air capacity is very inferior to the US. They may have a larger standing army (as noted by others only like 2 million rather than 100) but that would only matter if we were invading the mainland. IF war were to happen, China would be at a large disadvantage in sea and sky. They would have to rely on alternative means, like trade embargoes and the like (literally their most destructive weapon vis-a-vis the US and the West, but would wreck them too) and threatening neighbors friendly to the US like North Korea does. I can't imagine the Chinese would like being compared to the North Koreans. The Chinese aren't bat-shit crazy, so nukes aren't a factor unless we did something really stupid... like invade the mainland.

resources in the SCS. Some call the SCS the second Persian Gulf. There are also various minerals, sea salt fields and tons of gas. Much of the area is disputed with other countries claiming various parts. They include Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Islands in the South China Sea, including the Paracels Islands, the Pratas Islands, Scarborough Shoal and the Spratly Islands between Brunei, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

China has created it's own map of what it thinks it has the rights to. It is referred to as the nine-dash line.

China also has a dispute with Japan over some resource rich islands. This is significant because we are bound by treaty to defend Japan.

China won't participate in any international court over it's claims, nor will it negotiate with the countries all at once. China says it will only negotiate with each country individually and separately. It wants to bully the smaller countries.

This is why you hear Obama refer to the "pivot to Asia". We are beefing up our military presence there in case China wants to go to war over it's resource grab.

nothing else.
The reason we're building up our military presence there is because China has built up theirs (at warp speed, might I add). If China weren't breaking international law and refusing to be held accountable for their actions (through a treaty they ratified in 1982, not something from 100 yrs ago) we wouldn't need to beef up our presence. Somthing we haven't done in the past and don't want to do now.

I get that you hate America, but quite frequently the negative things the US has done are in response to even worse behavior from othe nation states.

Less waving anything, and more a mere flight in international air space no one but China recognizes as Chinese jurisdiction...

Unless of course, your belief is that flying through international airspace is little more than "dick waving;" yet I simply don't believe you're either that shallow or biased, and that given time, you'll eventually apply rational thought and reason rather than unsupported bumper-stickers.

100 million standing army is maybe little over the top - but they can muster a lot of more soldiers than US and Europe combined - and have a lot more ability to accept losses and pain than Europe and US..... After all - they are officially 1.3 billion people in PRC.. In the US little more than 300 million... In Europe, maybe 500 million - but to be honest Europe have its problems who is less than easy to handle now...

If PRC was to shoot down a intelligence aircraft who are in international air - then all hell is loose for sure - and a lot of forces, both PRC and US, will be involved... A possible war between PRC and US, is a possibility the next couple of decades - as PRC will try to impose some more control over the same area of space - that US have seen as their own....

the technology from the plane. They then gave us the crew members and the boxes of plane pieces to take back home after we apologized.

If I recall correctly we also had to give restitution for the Chinese plane and pilot involved in the incident.

A Simple Game

To be fair - the P3 Orion - was in PRC airspace - and had been warned a few times about being to near military instillations and had ignored all messages about going out in international water (or, as it was, into international airspace) - even if the aircraft itself was a known asset in the environment - as the aircraft had being busy looking at instillations all over the south china sea - and had being a pain in the famous ass for China for years...

And I do not think USA should be on their high horse about getting back aircrafts in crates - as they often had that habit under most of the cold war - when they had the luck of getting excess to military hardware from the Soviet Union - and in more than one instance outright stole the hardware from the Soviet Union - without even bother giving back the parts after examination of the aircraft.... Of course, from the protest of the soviet government - specially when it came to fighter aircrafts - USA got their share of aircrafts from people who defected - and even if international law stated that the aircraft was to get back, as it was property of the Soviet Union - it often ended up back home - in crates - with parts missing..

And it is correct, that the family of the plane after a long debate - got restitution from US after the aircraft incident - who the P3 orion managed to crash into (even if the story differ according to who you believe, some claim the PLA aircraft crashed into the Aurora on purpose - other claim it to be the Aurora who hit the aircraft on purpose - some even claim it to be a horrible accident - where both pilots did wrong turns - and it all ended as it did...

SorAs much as some tell America to mind their own business, there are many allies of America that rely on them for their defense in the face of bullies. If China doesn't watch it Japan will start re-arming heavily as they have been nullified since WWII.
