President Barack Obamas bid to make overhauling immigration policy a second term victory was dealt a serious blow as federal judges ruled the effort must remain on hold while 26 states sue to overturn it.
Obamas executive orders, which would allow 5 million undocumented immigrants to remain in the country, must be delayed until the lawsuit is resolved, the U.S. Court of Appeals in New Orleans ruled. The contentious case has drawn sometimes furious opposition from hundreds of members of Congress, and more than a few presidential contenders.
For years, Congress has been unable to agree on a revised law to address an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. Obama said he acted because the House has refused to take up a bipartisan measure passed by the Senate in 2013 that would create a path to citizenship for many of those immigrants.
To qualify under his deferral program, undocumented immigrants must have been in the U.S. for at least five years and have a child who is a citizen, or have been brought here as children themselves. They must also pass a criminal background check.

(128,922 posts)it's Obama's fault for not using the "bully pulpit" and "walking shoes" and wave the magic wand to force the circuit court to rule in his favor.

(13,058 posts)case the Justice Department may decide to try to go directly to the Supreme Court and bypass the full circuit. It probably depends on where the Justice Department feels it has the better chance of prevailing. The 5th Circuit is known to be quite conservative.

(363 posts)In 2006 the immigrant community put a million people in the street in los angeles and 500,000 in chicago, dallas, new york city and many hundred of thousands in other cities all on the same day. These were the biggest demonstrations ever seen in this country. Demonstrators could shut texas interstate highways airports and rail lines down in protest. I have written a movie screenplay on what could be done. It is at my web site: thealamoisavenged.com (I know the title is a little off setting ;but if you read the screenplay it will make since) Please read it and tell me what you think. I am trying to have it made into a movie like the battle of algeirs ;but no luck so far.

You're probably not going to get the response you want by asking people on a political board for a review.

(28,859 posts)I wonder if bread and butter issues like immigration,
food stamps, public education, affordable housing, and so on ...
issues clearly vital to immigrants and the working poor ...
trump the more hot button issues like choice and gay
marriage.
Religion and moral values carry a huge emotional charge
for people who will vote against their own best interests
as a result.
