Israel Seeking to Increase U.S. Aid to $4.5B
Source: JP Updates
Israel has begun talks with the US with the intention of increasing American aid to $4.5 billion in grant aid through 2028. Israels aid from America as outlined in the Foreign Military Financing deal will need to be reassessed before the present deal expires in 2017. In his 2013 visit to Israel, President Obama endorsed in principle $4.2 billion to $4.5 billion in annual FMF aid, according to an Israeli military source quoted by Defense News.
Israel is the largest single recipient of US aid and it has been an essential part of Israels continuing existence. It is interesting to note that due to that aid remaining relatively constant despite Israels flourishing economy, US aid now represents a mere 1.2% of Israels GDP.
Americas aid comes in many forms, though the majority is military. 70% of the aid is designated for Israeli purchases of military equipment from American companies and 74% of American aid to Israel is spent in the United States on US-made defense goods and services that support the US economy. The total is $3 billion annually, of which $1.8 billion is military assistance with the rest set aside for civilian purposes. In addition, America provides loan guarantees that amount to about $19 billion that Washington has granted Israel in recent years to make it easier for it to borrow overseas. Israel has used the loan guarantees very sparingly. America also transfers to Israel its surplus military equipment. Aid also comes in the form of US war stocks pre-positioned here and available for Israels emergency use, which have been valued at $1.2 billion. $500 million in annual funding has been set aside for cooperative anti-rocket and missile defense programs in recent years.
Much of the present negotiation is based around the changing threats to Israel based around Iran. Not only does the nuclear deal present a new threat which requires new solutions, such as the F-35 fighter jet, but Iran has doubled its military budget over the last ten years, funding other militaries that also threaten Israel.

(9,688 posts)The US is the world's premier arms producer/exporter.
Sure, this is paid for by US taxes, but on the other hand sales to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, etc., are enormous and should more than offset that?
The important thing is to keep wars going. That keeps employees at US munitions manufacturers employed, and with secure employment buying houses, TVs, washing machines,.... and so keeps the remainder of the US middle class happy.
Well, until the munitions manufacturers are allowed to set up shop in slave labor countries.

Numbers are hard to pin down but I think we spend about 7 billion dollars a year to defend Germany but not sure how much Germany kicks in. Japan pays us about 2 billion a year just for the base in Okinawa.
