Peru lawmakers reject bill to allow pregnant rape victims an abortion
Source: Thomson Reuters Foundation - Wed, 27 May 2015 17:15 GMT

BOGOTA, May 27 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Peruvian rape victims who have become pregnant have no legal option but to keep an unwanted pregnancy after Congress voted against a bill to legalise abortion in such cases, an issue that has divided ordinary Peruvians.

The vote, late on Tuesday, meant the Latin American nation kept in place a stringent law that permits abortion only if the mother's life or health is at risk.

"It has been decided to shelve this bill, which was proposed by civil society groups that aimed to decriminalise abortion, based on criteria proposed by the Congress committee that the basis of the right to life is from the moment of conception," said conservative congressman Juan Carlos Eguren.

Congressman Julio Rosas said the decision was taken to "safeguard the health of a mother and the greater interests of the unborn child."

The Catholic church still has a strong influence in these places.

south of the boarder, its just a modern extension of Operation Condor. I'm sure the church doesn't mind that the poor will suffer under these fascist regimes.

The people and politicians in these nations still go along with the church and the "Rightwing banksters and GOP think tank."

But the church's influence in declining in many majority Roman Catholic nations.

Ireland just ignored the church in a big way on marriage equality however they a similar restrictive abortion law.

I have hope that laws like this on women's choice might go by wayside sooner or later.

Santa Elena de Uairen, October 2nd, 2014. (Venezuelanalysis.com) - On Sunday, around 200 Venezuelans from various socialist collectives gathered in the student residences of Plaza Venezuela, in Caracas, to protest the country’s strict anti-abortion laws.

Abortion is explicitly illegal in Venezuela except in life-threatening cases. The punishment for a woman who has an abortion is six months to two years in prison, while a doctor or other person who performs the procedure can be sentenced one to three years.

Last week, at the 69th United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York City, a representative of the UN committee for children’s rights expressed concern with the high mortality rate among pregnant adolescents in Venezuela, as a result of clandestine abortions. The committee called upon the Venezuelan government to extend its policy to legalize abortion in instances of incest and rape.
