Greenpeace Wins Court Ruling in Battle with India Govt

Source: sun daily

A court in New Delhi on Wednesday ordered authorities to unfreeze Greenpeace India's bank accounts, extending a lifeline to the activist group which had faced closure of its local operations.

The High Court said Greenpeace could also receive local donations into its two main accounts, handing the environmental group a victory in its ongoing battle with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.

The right-wing government last month withdrew the group's foreign funding licence, citing violations of rules by opening accounts for foreign donations without informing authorities.

Greenpeace has been at loggerheads with the government over claims of environmental damage caused by India's heavy reliance on coal and the impact of deforestation and nuclear projects.

Greenpeace campaigner Priya Pillai was prevented by immigration officials from leaving Delhi in January after the government placed her on a suspicious persons list.

According to Indian media, a secret report by the main intelligence agency recently warned that delays to key development projects being sought by Greenpeace and other activist groups could knock up to three percentage points off India's annual growth rate.

Greenpeace could not prove the donations came from legitimate sources and not from say, Pakistani ISI or China just to put a monkey-wrench in India's development projects.

The foreign funds shouldn't be allowed without full transparency which Greenpeace refused to provide. We all opposed campaigns that hide secret donations from the Kochroaches didn't we?

They should be able to raise and spend funds domestically however.

Because, you know, the problem in India is all those NGO's . BJP, just like Congress before it, can't stand the idea of money getting distributed without their control (and their cut).

The ISI comment is telling; this is the same government that refuses to admit that the Naxalites are a bigger threat than Pakistan despite their killing an order of magnitude more Indians...

Despite there being no evidence for it other than "Delhi wishes it were true".

Pure unmitigated bullshit.

Greenpeace is acting beyond the petty boundaries of your nation for the good of
the entire planet and everything in & on it. The fanatical nationalism that leads
people to blame environmentalists for some mythical plot in order to allow the
endless growth of pollution, exploitation & global damage is pathetic.

Decades of socialist rule in India has nothing to show for it except endless poverty, famines, Pakistan, stagnant economy, massive government controls to choke capital formation and pandering to vote banks. There still was massive pollution and exploitation.

Now, someone is trying to eliminate poverty the right way, with economic growth and purists are trying to stop it. If India's poor are to be fed, Greenpeace is not going to do it but power projects and development are needed. Pakistan knows it and funds NGOs to oppose all development.

Typical Western socialists' view when they look at China and India -- "We have got ours, now you can't have yours."
