Two men charged on DNA evidence in 1978 rape and murder in California

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Two men have been charged with murder in California in the 1978 cold case murder of a young mother who was abducted from a gas station where she worked, after DNA advances connected the men to the crime, authorities said on Wednesday.

Neal Matthews, 58, was arrested last week at his home in Lancaster, California, and Terry Moses, 59, was serving time in prison on an unrelated case when he was charged in this case, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

Both men are charged with murder with the special circumstance allegations that the slaying occurred in conjunction with a robbery, kidnapping and rape.

The charges stem from the slaying 37 years ago of Leslie Long, a 20-year-old mother of three.

1. Good to see justice being served, even though it was a long time in coming.

It always baffles me to hear of such terrible acts over paltry sums of money.

2. With DNA available I would hope more rape kits would be tested and those responsible

get their time in court. It may be possible there are repeat offenders, this needs to stop after the first rape is committed.

I suspect there are a lot of boys out there being abused right now. Or being raised in a toxic environment and being told to have a stiff upper lip and not be such a whiny baby who will end up being very violent as adults. We have to stop this business of teaching boys to tough it out and not cry when they are being abused by their families and/or bullied at school.
