India heatwave death toll tops 1,800 as officials warn of more to come

Source: AsianCorrispondent.com

India’s heatwave death toll has risen to at least 1,826 as meteorological officials warned it would continue for at least two more days.

The weeks-long heatwave, which officials have described as “severe” as temperatures soared to 47 degrees Celsius (117 degrees Fahrenheit), has caused hundreds of deaths in recent days.

The southeastern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telengana have been hit the hardest. At least 852 people have died from the stifling heat in Andhra Pradesh since May 13, a government statement said. In neighboring Telengana at least 266 have died from heat-related causes.

The poor, elderly and those working outside have been hardest hit. High humidity in some areas is making the heatwave particularly severe.

1. A meditation on greed.

This horror in India seems to me to be a preview of the fate of the poor in extreme weather, here and in other societies, in which greed has triumphed over good. Greed triumphing over good has also caused the extreme weather, since the triumphant greedy care nothing for Mother Earth and her critters and the matrix of life in which we evolved, as they care nothing for any human life except their own.

We hear of poor workers in India who cannot afford to miss one day of work in extreme weather--farm and other outdoor workers. They have to choose between working in 117 degree heat or not being able to eat or feed their families. We hear of the elderly and other vulnerable people dying like flies, from mere heat, and we can be sure that the uber rich in India are not dying of heat, nor will the uber rich here or elsewhere die of the extreme heat or cold that have been brought on by climate change, fueled by the greed of the uber rich. Nor is it the uber rich who are dying in the Texas floods, nor in the increasingly ferocious and frequent hurricanes, nor in any other catastrophe induced by greed such as the earthquakes caused by fracking, or the collapse of the food chain that may well be in progress from corporate monoculture and pesticide pollution. The uber rich will always eat. They will always fly away from disasters in their luxury jets. They will always have air conditioning (or slaves to fan them), or heat (or slaves to chop the wood and stoke the fires), as needed, or escape to other climates, as their whim dictates.

Well, maybe not always. Maybe this enormous gulf between the poor majority and the uber rich will come to an end, when Earth's ecosystem finally collapses, unable to sustain the rapine of the uber rich over the last hundred years, and we all end up in the same boat with nowhere to go, after trashing every last inch of our only home.

Contemplate this horror in India and see what will happen--what is happening--elsewhere when we allow greed to triumph over the good of all. If we are to survive as a species, we must become communal at some point, and act communally to curtail the rich, to subject them to the will of the majority and to turn public policy toward the common good. We simply must, or we will likely go the way of the dinosaurs. The uber rich have mounted a massive propaganda campaign to maintain and enhance their riches, and have conspired on all sorts of controls over the rest of us--from militarized police to 'TRADE SECRET' vote counting. Their propaganda demonizes the common good and communal action. Even the mildest socialism is demonized, and the communists are the very devils themselves.

We, the majority of the world, need to consider these things, with our own intelligent, creative, independent human minds, and come together on solutions, and enact them. We need to immunize ourselves to propaganda of any kind--but especially to the dominant propaganda of today, the Corporate Rulers' propaganda--and think for ourselves, and join with others to undo all this harm and put things back into balance, using the best form of government ever thought up by human beings: democracy. Real democracy, that is--not this paltry imitation controlled by the uber rich.
