Another round of rain brings more serious flooding in Texas

HOUSTON (AP) — Floodwaters submerged Texas highways and threatened more homes Friday after another round of heavy rain added to the damage inflicted by storms that have killed at least 20 people and left 14 missing.

The line of thunderstorms that stalled over Dallas dropped as much as 7 more inches overnight. The rain seeped into homes and stranded hundreds of drivers, many of whom lingered along highways that were nearly gridlocked from the high water and abandoned vehicles.

Fire rescue crews responded to about 260 calls that included trapped vehicles and accidents, authorities said.

The Colorado River in Wharton and the Brazos and San Jacinto rivers near Houston were the main focus of concern as floodwaters moved from North and Central Texas downstream toward the Gulf of Mexico.

The common refrain seems to be "line of thunderstorms that *stalled*."

Even in Houston earlier this week you could see two distinct bands of very high rainfall levels. The line of storms marched S-SE and stalled briefly over an area north of me. Then it came through and dropped a lot of rain, but pretty much nobody for miles north or south of me flooded (unless they'd done something intensely stupid, like block storm drains or redo their yard's drainage so that heavy rain would drain through their living room).

But the thunderstorm line seriously stalled over SW to NE Houston. The storms moved, often rapidly. But they followed in each others' footsteps, so to speak.

Go 30 miles south of the extremely flooded areas and they got perhaps 1/2" rain. The coast 40 miles south saw a trace of rain. High pressure blocked the storm's advance.
