Bobby Thompson is finally in federal custody on charges of money laundering, fraud and identity theft.

But the real identity of the man behind the U.S. Navy Veterans Association, a multimillion-dollar sham charity that operated from a duplex in Tampa, remains a mystery.

When Thompson was arrested Monday night in Portland, Ore., he refused to tell federal marshals his name.

He signed the booking sheet at the jail with an "X."

A tax-exempt Navy veterans group founded by one of Michele Bachmann’s top campaign contributors may be under investigation by the IRS at the request of U.S. Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA). The group is under investigation in at least six states and has been banned from operating in at least three.

Webb has asked the IRS to investigate the U.S. Navy Veterans Association, a national charitable veterans organization founded by Bobby Thompson of Tampa, FL, after reading “alarming reports” that the charity’s directors cannot be located and its multimillion-dollar expenditures cannot be accounted for.The U.S. Navy Veterans Association was founded by Thompson, who donated $10,000 to Rep. Michele Bachmann’s campaign at her Minneapolis event with former halftime governor Sarah Palin April 7. Thompson was only one of six individuals who ponied up the 10 large to have his picture taken with the Tea Party darlings.

Wow, they got him. The Tampa Bay Times has been following this guy closely. They're not the only paper interested in him; the Roanoke Times has been following the story too. Our beloved AG, Ken Cuccinelli, received money from Thompson. When it was found out what a fraud Thompson was, Cuccinelli said he would keep the contibution anyway. After a while, he did relent.

Authorities finally may get to solve the mystery behind the fugitive known as Bobby Thompson, who allegedly ran a fraudulent charity for military veterans that bilked millions of dollars from donors in Virginia and 40 other states.

The initial findings were turned over to Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's office, which has civil enforcement authority under the state's charitable solicitation law.

Cuccinelli has distanced himself from the case because he accepted $55,500 in political contributions in 2009 from Thompson, who was the second-largest individual contributor to the Republican's campaign. After Thompson went missing in 2010, Cuccinelli donated $55,700 - the sequestered campaign funds plus interest - to veterans support groups in the state. His chief deputy, Chuck James, is overseeing the investigation of USNVA.

It remains unclear whether Thompson will face criminal charges in Virginia. Cuccinelli spokesman Brian Gottstein wrote in an email Tuesday that the attorney general's office has referred information about Thompson and the charity to "appropriate authorities." Gottstein said he could not identify those authorities because the investigation is ongoing.

The U.S. Marshals Service had thought back in February that Thompson was in New Mexico.

Authorities in the U.S. have found almost $1million in a storage unit belonging to a fugitive accused of running a scam that collected millions in donations from people who believed they were helping U.S. Navy veterans.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine says the U.S. Marshals Service and investigators from his office found more than $981,650 in cash and birth certificates belonging to the fugitive known as Bobby Thompson.

12. Under law his "True Idenity" may be "Bobby Thompson"

Under the Common Law, a person could use ANY NAME as long as the name was used consistently and for non-fraudulent purposes. Thus if this Defendant started to use the name of "Bobby Thompson" in a state that still follows the Common Law rule (My home state of Pennsylvania is one such states) then that use of "Bobby Thompson" makes "Bobby Thompson" his legal name, i.e. his "true identity".

Now, Pennsylvania has adopted some modification on the common law, rule, for example felons can NOT change their name without court approval (And notification to the District Attorney), names of children below 18 must be agreed to by BOTH parents (Through if the child does the change on his or her own, the Common Law Rule still applies, this is seen in children who use their middle name instead of their first name for they like the middle name better).

Now, the even the Common Law made the change of name for fraudulent purposes illegal, but that had more to do with inheritance and land ownership laws then other types of Fraud. The "Charity" run by Bobby Thompson was clearly a fraud, but was his use of the name "Bobby Thompson" part of that Fraud? If yes, probably illegal under the Common Law, if no, the change of name (if it was a change in name) was legal in those states that still follow the Common Law Rule as to Names.
