Kuwait Shia mosque 'hit by suicide blast'

A suicide bomber has targeted a Shia mosque around the time of Friday prayers in the Kuwaiti capital, security officials and witnesses say.

The scale of the attack is not yet known, though a number of fatalities has been reported.

The blast hit the Imam Sadiq Mosque in al-Sawaber - a busy area to the east of Kuwait City.

Attacks of this kind are extremely rare in Kuwait. No group has yet said it was behind the blast.

British tourist David Schofield told Sky News that he was by the pool when he heard "quite a large explosion" and guests started to run back towards the hotel. "We heard people saying there were guns on the beach. People were shooting on the beach," he said.
"People are running around the hotel. No-one has really been told what to do."
Pictures posted on Instagram appeared to shot a couple dead on the beach with a couple dead with gunshot wounds to the head....

but it seems like it's definitely Sunni vs Shiite flavor. Are ISIS mostly Sunni muslims, if so then that's pretty much the issue here.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has claimed on Friday the deadly bombing on a Kuwaiti mosque, which left at least 24 people killed.

An ISIS statement posted on social media identified the bomber as Abu Suleiman al-Muwahed and said the target was a “temple of the rejectionists” - a term used by the Islamist militant group to refer to Shiite Muslims - and said dozens were killed or wounded.

17. Kuwait Shia mosque blast death toll 'rises to 25'; 202 injured

The death toll from a suicide attack on a Shia mosque during Friday prayers in the Kuwaiti capital has risen to at least 25, the interior ministry says.

Another 202 people were wounded, it added. Images circulating online show bodies on the mosque floor amid debris.

The blast hit the Imam Sadiq Mosque in a busy area to the east of Kuwait City.

An Islamic State- (IS) affiliated group said it was behind the attack. IS has carried out similar recent attacks in neighbouring Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
