Attacker in an Afghan Uniform Kills a NATO Soldier

An attacker in an Afghan Army uniform opened fire on coalition soldiers in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, killing one service member. It was possibly the latest in a recent string of so-called green-on-blue assaults on coalition soldiers by their Afghan partners this year.

The attacker was killed when coalition soldiers returned fire, NATO said. As is NATO policy, officials did not confirm the nationality of the dead coalition soldier, or give any other details. NATO said it was investigating the attack.

The shooting took place in the Marja district of Helmand Province, said Dawoud Ahmadi, a spokesman for the Helmand governor.

Mr. Ahmadi said initial reports suggested that the shooting happened in the late afternoon after a dispute broke out between coalition and Afghan forces. He said another NATO soldier was wounded, but NATO did not confirm that.

1. Bad news, but for a change properly presented in that only the fact that the uniform

was of an Afghan soldier at least until such time as it is sure whether he was one or an imposter. Though I fear we will find out it was an actual soldier, for now this is a well worded article in a sea of poorly worded hype most of the time.

An Afghan soldier has shot dead a US marine and wounded another before being killed by return fire. It is the latest in a series of attacks against foreigners by government forces working with coalition troops.

The soldier started shooting at international troops in Tarekh Naver in the Marjah district, a former Taliban stronghold that was the site of a major offensive by coalition forces in 2010, said a spokesman for the governor of Helmand province.

A senior US defence official in Washington said the victim was a US marine in Helmand province and one other marine was wounded in the attack on Sunday.
