47% of Israelis Back Military Strike on Iran

Source: The Forward / JTA

Forty-seven percent of respondents in a survey conducted by Maariv, an Israeli daily, supported a military strike to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear arms.

Seventy-one percent of Israelis say they believe accord brings Iran closer to bomb, and 51 percent support bypassing Obama in effort to nix it.

The poll was published Friday after Tuesday’s nuclear deal between Tehran and major world powers, which agreed on the details of an unsigned accord that would offer Tehran sanctions relief in exchange for a scaling back of the Iranian nuclear program.

The paper did not give a sample size or margin of error for the poll carried out by Panels Politics Polling Institute. It did not provide information on respondents’ age, gender or religion.

in the long run it's healthy that support for Israel find its rightful place on the rightwing side of the partisan divide.

from any other country. Can you imagine if Japan or China or Germany or Mexico or Canada strolled into Congress and said "never mind what this legislation would do for the American people, what really matters is what's good for us?"

The Israelis labor under a massive sense of entitlement--they believe that it's the job of the US government to look out for Israel above all others, even the United States.

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/the-ridiculous-mr-oren

It is a gripping anecdote and for Oren it symbolizes both the downward trajectory of the US-Israel relationship and the President's efforts to damage it. And yet, as Kampeas shows in methodical detail, none of the key elements of Oren's story actually happened. Israel was not the first country to render aide. All six of the countries Obama named preceded Israel into the country and when Obama made his statement Israel's team wasn't even in the country yet. (Read the details if you must.) For a small country, Israel routinely outdoes itself in rendering aid in natural and man-made disasters around the world. And the fine, granular analysis of just when Israeli rescue and hospital teams arrived in the country is painful and would be unnecessary if Oren hadn't made it another centerpiece example in his fantasy of President Obama's efforts to denigrate Israel and degrade the alliance between the two countries.

Having read enough of these bogus stories from Oren's book, I now agree with Kampeas who says he fully believes that Oren did feel kicked in the chest. The countries Obama name-checked "among others" were Brazil, Mexico, Canada, France, Colombia and the Dominican Republic, each countries with historic relationships with Haiti. Oren was actually wounded that Israel was not also mentioned with this select group among the numerous other countries that had similarly pledged relief because Israel had already announced that it was sending a team - one that did not go into operation until the day after Obama spoke.

Seeing this all in a greater context, the entirety of Oren's tenure in America and the impulse behind his book begins to come into focus. Oren's reaction makes perfect sense as that of a coddled child who is genuinely hurt when he is treated in a friendly and reasonable way along with peers as opposed to with extreme deference and preference. Only in this context would it make any sense for Obama to single out Israel, a country half way around the world with no particular or historic relationship with Haiti which was not even on the ground yet rendering aid. This isn't an example of a snub but painful evidence of an extremely unrealistic sense of entitlement. Again, I now believe Oren really did feel kicked in the chest. The Haiti anecdote perfectly captures the entirety of the book and Oren's critique of both Obama and American Jews. Looking back on Oren's time as Ambassador, he now looks like nothing so much as a self-awareness Mr Magoo walking through Washington, encountering entirely normal behavior or significant and serious critiques of Israeli policy by American Jews, all of which he was incapable of seeing on their own terms and, confounded, creating a fantasy world of Jewish self-hatred, conflicted identity and personal and national self-pity to fill in the blanks.

And here we see this sense of entitlement on full display. Forget what the United States, and Germany, and China, and France, and Russia, and the UK want, or what's good for those countries.

No, the only country that matters is Israel. Because for some reason, it's more special than everyone else.

The Israelis need a reminder every decade or so that they don't get to dictate terms to the US on how it conducts its foreign policy.

Time for another hard lesson.

Was this a poll question on a web site that could easily be freeped?

It is not unlikely that the result is actually accurate. It is not just Netanyahu, but Herzog and Lapid blasting the deal. What it does say is that the assumption made by AIPAC and others that American interest an that Israel coincide is not true.

This morning on Morning Joe, Kerry clearly spoke of the fact that killing the deal leaves few options to constrain Iran. This really is a choice of a diplomatic solution - which the 6 nations negotiating worked hard to get - or a disastrous war. Israel has moved to the right of the US. It is clear that they never budge to follow a US policy that they disagree with -- yet they somehow think we owe them our support even when they are wrong.

To me, that is incredibly sad as it shows how far Israel has moved from wanting to be a light to the other nations.

I would suspect that if there were a poll in Iran, the numbers might be lower than those in Israel - even though it is contrary to the public chants.

I know I have - so now I say - go ahead - do it..satisfy your thirst for destruction...pathetic warmongers - and we prop them up!!!

A good read - The Fire Next Time - Max Blumenthal

Members of the Israeli elite have benefitted directly from the Gaza wars by orchestrating the assaults as generals and politicians and then taking jobs as lobbyists, marketing to foreign militaries the newest weaponry and battlefield tactics tested on Gaza’s civilian population. Sick!

Ehud Barak, for instance, was the defense minister who directed Israel’s disproportionate attacks on Gaza in 2008-2009 and again in 2012. He was also one of the closest associates of Michael Federman, a former member of his Sayeret Matkal commando unit and a political advisor who also happened to be the owner of Israel’s largest weapons manufacturer, Elbit Systems. SICK!

It was perhaps unsurprising then that, after leading the Defense Ministry during so many wars deploying and promoting Elbit's latest weaponry, Barak's name suddenly wound up on the Forbes list of Israel’s wealthiest politicians in 2012.

to continue -

Among the high tech weaponry being touted by the magazine is a drone “capable of loitering over the target and attacking it.” This is a reference to Israeli Aerospace Industries’ Harop, a “suicide drone” first tested in southern Lebanon that hovers over its target before diving into it with 10 kilograms of explosives packed into its nose.

With militaries around the world snapping up the Harop by the hundreds, Israel’s weapons sector is eager to roll out a next generation vehicle that includes its own launch pad. In order to brand the newfangled drone with the magical marketing label of “field tested,” IAI simply needs another war.

Seems to me - Israel will scratch that itch sooner, rather than later.....
