Arne Duncan, President Obamas Secretary of Education, endorsed marriage equality during an appearance on Morning Joe on Monday following Vice President Joe Bidens support for the issue. Yes, I do, Duncan said in response to a question from Mark Halperin, noting that he had never been publicly asked his opinion on marriage equality.

(5,624 posts)little relevance to his post as ED Sec'y. Now if he were to step down as Ed Sec'y and take a post like "Gay Marriage Czar" then I guess I'd support him.

(5,061 posts)First, they have Biden say it, then they have the official position (i.e. hedge) of the administation reiterated, and now they have Duncan come out and say it. Biden's respected, if not liked, by progressives, whereas Duncan is regarded as a stale turd.
This is more triangulation: get the support of progressives who support marriage equality while not tying the President's hands to a position that they feel would alienate moderates and independents in the general election.
Folks who believe in three-d chess will see this as a signal that the president himself will come on board when reelected.
Folks who are cynical will see this as triangulation.
Both may be true nonetheless.
