House Panel Targets Aid to Poor to Spare Defense Cuts
Source: Bloomberg
A U.S. House committee voted to cut spending on food stamps, health insurance and other aid for the poor to head off scheduled cuts in defense spending.
The House Budget Committee voted 21-9 today to approve legislation that would reduce government spending by more than $300 billion over the next decade.
Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican, said the measure would eliminate duplicative programs and wasteful spending to spare the Pentagon from cuts without raising taxes.
We shouldnt be taking more from hardworking Americans to fix Washingtons mistakes, said Ryan. We should be solving the problem with structural reforms to our entitlement programs to make them strong and sustainable.

according to this Ynet article its even worse defense got more than it asked for!
A US House panel has unveiled a $608 billion defense spending bill that restores some of the programs the Pentagon wanted to cut next year and provides nearly $1 billion for Israel's missile defense systems including the Iron Dome and Magic Wand.
The House Appropriations Committee released the bill on Monday that includes $519.2 billion for the fiscal 2013 base budget and $88.5 billion for Afghanistan and other counterterrorism activities. That's $1.1 billion more than the current level and $3.1 billion more than President Barack Obama requested.
