"Let me ask you a very simple question: Is Israel safer with a one-year breakout time or a two-month breakout time?"
Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday continued his aggressive defense of the nuclear agreement recently reached with Iran. Pushing back against mounting criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and several pro-Israel lobbying groups in the U.S., Kerry framed the nuclear accord as a boon for Israeli national security.
"For Israel, for the region, we started with a two-month breakout time," Kerry said in a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations, referring to the estimated amount of time it would take Iran to create enough fissile material to fuel a bomb.
"With this agreement, for ten years, the breakout time will be one year or more," he continued. "Let me ask you a very simple question: Is Israel safer with a one-year breakout time or a two-month breakout time?"
(snip)
"We've seen the Prime Minister draw a cartoon of a bomb at the U.N. and so on and so forth," he said. "But what's happened? What has anyone done about it? Anybody got a plan to roll it back?"

(59,506 posts)and their case is that it harms them - though I have to agree with Kerry (yeah, not an unusual event) that a one year break out for 10 years is better than a 2 month break out now.
To give an idea of how intense the lobbying is, a friend of mine from synagogue was furious that Haddasah, which until yesterday she belonged to, called her three times yesterday to lobby her representatives. This is actually more divisive from what I have seen than the war in Gaza was.
For many genuinely concerned that BiBi could be telling the truth (it could happen, couldn't it?), Kerry's clear cut words on this are important. In the long run, for Israel, the region, and the world - that comparison says the deal is better than the status quo. It is so obvious, that Hadassah, AIPAC and others are arguing not for the status quo, but for a nonexistent, not obtainable unicorn - "a better deal". (As if, the 6 nations really would reject the carefully designed deal, return to the table, leave in the interim agreement and spend time working on a plan that BiBi would like. )
At the end, it comes down to:
1) This deal or no deal
2) If no deal, there will almost certainly be pressure to bomb Iran - especially because there will be no monitors and some will argue they are even closer than 2 months and we have to stop them now.
More than the IWR even, a vote against this is a vote for war over giving diplomacy a chance.

Sorry, cal. These threads on Iran nuclear deal are falling on deaf 'primary navel-gazing' ears.

On the other hand, unlike, apparently, most of the Congress, I am not beholden to Israel.

(2,412 posts)The alternative is the threat of another war in the Middle East and a more of a threat to Israel, the loss of Iran as a potential trading partner to Russia and China. We need the deal with Iran and we need to stand up to the Right Wing in this country. We cannot let them win this, the stakes are too high.
