North Carolina Gay Marriage Ban: Obama Says He's 'Disappointed'
Source: Huffington Post
WASHINGTON President Barack Obama's campaign says he's "disappointed" with North Carolina's constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
Obama campaign spokesman Cameron French said in a Tuesday statement that the ban on same-sex unions is "divisive and discriminatory." French says same-sex couples deserve the same rights and legal protections as straight couples.
Obama officials have been embroiled in a national discussion of same-sex marriage since Vice President Joe Biden said Sunday that he is "absolutely comfortable" with gay marriage. Obama himself hasn't embraced legalizing gay marriage, saying his views on the subject are "evolving."
North Carolinians overwhelming voted Tuesday to amend their state constitution, strengthening a state law that already outlawed same-sex unions.

(100,068 posts)Fuck you Bush - after making this such a fucking wedge issue in 2000 and 2004 this is what we're dealing with now. We need an equal rights amendment, not this shit!

(53,956 posts)All I see in the damn article is "Obama campaign spokesman Cameron French said.." and "Barack Obama's campaign says...
Mr. President, if you are so "disappointed," then pull up to the podium and say, in the microphone, "I, President Obama, am disappointed by this vote!" Do it!
The gAyTM in this household says, "Sorry to "disappoint", but we're out of money!"

(51,550 posts)He is obviously walking a fine line here. He has to deal with the reality that 30 states have voted to ban same-sex marriage, and continue to do so every time it is put up for a vote, including in my very blue state of CA. Obama is doing the best he can, and he has done more for the LGBT community than any other President. He refused to defend DOMA and got rid of DADT. That IS leadership.
Instead of expressing your outrage at the 61% of NCers who voted for this bigotry, you're pissed at Obama because he didn't walk up to a mic and say he was disappointed rather than saying it through his campaign. And until he does, you will not contribute to his campaign. Yes, that makes sense, because Romney would be SO much better for the LGBT community.
The only way all these bigotry-enshrining state laws are going to be overturned is if we get a liberal majority on the Supreme Court. And that is only going to happen if we keep electing Dems as POTUS.

(53,956 posts)Oh, the "Romney would be better" dig. How fucking trite. I have every right to be angry and "disappointed" and don't need someone wagging his/her finger at me telling me my reaction is wrong.

(32,020 posts)From Wikipedia:
However, Pres. Kennedy did order federal intervention in cases where the Univ. of Mississippi and Univ. of Alabama blocked black students from entering campus, albeit "reluctantly" in the Mississippi case. Kennedy still didn't want to introduce a full civil rights bill, telling Martin Luther King Jr.: "If we get into a long fight over this in Congress, it will bottleneck everything else, and we will still get no bill." Finally, on June 11, 1963, JFK went on national TV to give an address launching civil rights initiatives, but Kennedy was assassinated nearly five months later and did not live to see his successor LBJ sign those initiatives into law the next year.
50 years later Obama is facing a similar situation. Sure, your community/state may be sympathetic to gay marriage, but keep in mind there are huge swaths of this country where homophobia is still rampant. Especially in the African-American community where many of them vote for Obama/Democrats yet attend churches that preach against homosexuality. In fact, homophobia is well known to be an issue among black Americans (see this article "Homophobia: it's a black thing" written by a black columnist of the Tampa Bay Times).
Realistically, given the cultural climate in America, you can't just expect Obama to come out for gay marriage instantly.

(53,956 posts)You do know what a "strawman" is? If not, here...
1.Person A has position X.
2.Person B disregards certain key points of X and instead presents the superficially similar position Y. The position Y is a distorted version of X and can be set up in several ways, including: 1.Presenting a misrepresentation of the opponent's position.
2.Quoting an opponent's words out of context i.e. choosing quotations that misrepresent the opponent's actual intentions (see fallacy of quoting out of context).[2]
3.Presenting someone who defends a position poorly as the defender, then refuting that person's arguments thus giving the appearance that every upholder of that position (and thus the position itself) has been defeated.[1]
4.Inventing a fictitious persona with actions or beliefs which are then criticized, implying that the person represents a group of whom the speaker is critical.
5.Oversimplifying an opponent's argument, then attacking this oversimplified version.
3.Person B attacks position Y, concluding that X is false/incorrect/flawed.
This sort of "reasoning" is fallacious, because attacking a distorted version of a position fails to constitute an attack on the actual position.

(32,020 posts)why not on gay marriage? That sounds like a puh-retty good idea...so I'll concede my JFK analogy was flawed given how Obama has turned it up against the CONS in recent months.

(26,290 posts)during an election year is almost tantamount to political suicide because the gop will use it like they have in the past to rally their base to get them out to vote.
It sucks and the people in NC and in other states who voted in favor of such a bigoted pos suck but that doesnt nullify the the political reality of the situation.

Putting it mildly - that is disgusting and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Edited to say, I've changed my mind. Lil Missy doesn't owe me an explanation. If she chooses to edit her post, that's on her, but I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt.
I don't think Lil Missy's words were meant to be homophobic. Hurtful, yes. Homophobic, no.
Although I don't agree with Lil Missy's opinion, I do believe that she's certainly entitled to have a viewpoint that differs from mine. However rudely she chooses to make her point is up to her.
If her post should have been hidden, it would have been because of rudeness and not homophobia.

(8,028 posts)I think her post is hurtful and dismissive to all LGBTQs but especially to those in North Carolina. Especially today.
My change of mind has to do with whether or not her words were intended to be homophobic. I don't believe that they were. Hurtful, yes. Homophobic, no.

Civil rights for blacks was not voted on by the American people because we all know it would have lost big time. The federal government voted for civil rights for blacks. Same here, many people are afraid of gays because of what many religions are teaching.

(64 posts)Look at the precincts in NC and how they voted. In the more educated precincts around major universities, they voted in favor of gay marriage in a landslide. In the more rural, backwoods, undereducated parts of NC, they voted against the civil right. We really need the votes of undereducated bigots to count for less. Otherwise, just let President Obama sign an executive order allowing gay marriage across the country and be done with it.
I for one am boycotting NC now.
