Protesters on behalf of Black Lives Matter interrupted the planned rally for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on Saturday afternoon.
The rally at Seattles Westlake Park, drawing a massive crowd, ended around 3 p.m. with the Vermont senator choosing to leave after protesters went up on the stage and stayed there, controlling the microphone. As he was exiting and greeting supporters, he asked that they attend the 7 p.m. rally at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.

(67,441 posts)first of all the organizers must secure and control the stage and microphone as part of running the event and providing a safe place for participants on the stage. evidently there was no control even though it is well known that at least one group of people have promised to disrupt such events.
secondly, telling the audience that they are all racists is not a way to make friends and influence people
some people just can't tell when they've won their moral victory and it's time to move on.
and what does this tell us about the candidate's planning and leadership when it is known this sort of thing will happen and it ends in the candidate leaving.

If anyone in politics has done something for the African American community, it is the liberals.
However, I do get their racist liberal vibe. Having being poor as a kid and living in what one might call a ghetto, I understand the conditions that poor minorities, as well as non minorities have to go through. Even though there are liberals who are backing their cause, they don't know what it's like living in the ghetto, living poor, being target by the police. They feel sorry for the folks who are less fortunate, and do nothing to make these poor folks become part of their community.
I also think that there is a part that the Black Lives Matter folks don't get. They don't understand that Bernie came from a poor family, and he understands a lot of these issues, and has worked for them for a long long time. That's more than I could say for any other candidate.

Presidential candidate Sanders to find friendly territory in Seattle visit (headline)
Good, positive local news coverage from 3 main Seattle papers, the Seattle Times, the Puget Sound Business Journal and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/presidential-candidate-sanders-expected-to-draw-crowds-in-seattle-visit/
Is Seattle Bernie Sanders kind of town? The Democratic presidential candidate brings his fiery, anti-corporate rhetoric to Seattle on Saturday for two rallies that could attract thousands.(subheadline)
Seattle is friendly territory for a candidate like Sanders and organizers expect thousands from across the state will pack two events: a 1 p.m. Social Security event at Westlake Park and a 6 p.m. campaign rally at Edmundson Pavilion.
As the first 2016 contender to publicly campaign in Washington, Sanders visit contrasts with recent secretive stopovers by other candidates. Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton and Republican Jeb Bush each slipped into the Seattle area this year to mingle at penthouses and mansions with donors who paid thousands of dollars to attend. Sanders only scheduled fundraiser is a small, $200-a-person meet-and-greet at Capitol Hills Comet Tavern.
http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/presidential-candidate-sanders-expected-to-draw-crowds-in-seattle-visit/
Bernie Sanders expects avid Seattle crowds Saturday (headline)
The Bernie Sanders phenomenon comes to Seattle Saturday with an address at Seattle's Westlake Park, a University of Washington rally and a $200-a-person fundraiser at the Comet Tavern.
It will be the first Northwest campaign appearances for the Vermont senator, who's been Hillary Clinton's most vigorous challenger for the Democratic presidential nomination.
His first event is at Westlake Park for a 1 p.m. "celebration" of Social Security and Medicare. Sanders, a 73-year-old independent who is challenging Clinton from the left, has called for a national single-payer health care program. At 6 p.m., Sanders holds a rally at the University of Washington's Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
Sanders' campaign says his July 29 nationwide series of "meet-ups" drew 105,000 participants, and that Washington state had the third-highest concentration of these meetings in the nation with 120, after California and New York.

Bernie Sanders is raising money at the Comet Tavern on Saturday: No Medina mansion for him(headline)
Sen. Bernie Sanders is carrying his campaign for the 2016 Democratic nomination to the historic Comet Tavern on Capitol Hill Saturday, eschewing the usual presidential path to Medina, Hunts Point, Laurelhurst and waterfront mansions.
Hillary Clinton or Jeb Bush, hes not. The Sanders campaign will charge for the event, $1,000 to host and $200 to get in the door at the Meet and Greet, with doors open at 4 p.m. and the event at 5 p.m.
But its a far cry from the $50,000 to sit at the head table at last years Clinton Foundation fundraiser, or the candidates $2,700-a-head June event in Madison Park. A penthouse Roundtable with Bush in June carried a $12,500 price tag. Brunch with President Obama on a recent Hunts Point foray set guests back $17,200.
Sanders is speaking at an early afternoon Social Security rally in Westlake Park, sharing the stage with leather-lunged voices of the Seattle left (and folk singer Jim Page). He has an early evening rally at Hec Ed Pavilion at the University of Washington. A similar rally, three weeks ago in Phoenix, drew 11,000 supporters.

The first one was sponsored by someone else and it was totally about social security, Medicare and Medicaid.
The last rally of the night was planned by Bernie's campaign.

(11,491 posts)I am so upset that people can't listen to my candidate, and that somehow information on all Bernie has done isn't getting theough to them, to where they feel its ok to try and ruin his campaign.
Is there no other forum where big crowds are? Obviously they chose this one because it was loose.
Try to get away with this at any republican event or Hillary's and be thrown in jail.
I am white so yes I can't possbly know how it feels to be threatened everytime you step out of your house. But I care, in my own way I care. I have always felt we are all the same inside and hate seeing others treated different.
Stuff like this just makes me mad, confused. After watching how awful they have been treated by cops lately I get the anger, I just don't get why they are taking it out on Bernie, unless they really believe Hillary or someone else will help them more so take him down like Meagan tried with Trump.

PRESS RELEASE: Black Lives Matter Seattle #BowDownBernie Action
MEDIA CONTACTS: Marissa Johnson blacklivesmatterseattle@gmail.com
Black Lives Matter Seattle organizers and supporters take over Bernie Sanders rally at Westlake on Saturday, August 8, 2015.
Today BLM Seattle, with the support of other Black organizers and non-Black allies and accomplices, held Bernie Sanders publicly accountable for his lack of support for the Black Lives Matter movement and his blatantly silencing response to the #SayHerName #IfIDieInPoliceCustody action that took place at Netroots this year.
Bernies arrival in Seattle is largely significant in the context of the state of emergency Black lives are in locally as well as across America. The Seattle Police Department has been under federal consent decree for the last three years and has been continually plagued by use-of-force violations and racist scandals amongst their rank and file. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has refused to push any reform measures for police accountability, not even the numerous recommendations of his self-appointed Community Police Commission. The Seattle School District suspends Black students at a rate six times higher than their white counterparts, feeding Black children into the school-to-prison pipeline. King County has fought hard to push through a plan to build a $210 million new youth jail to imprison these children, amid intense community criticism and dissent. The Central District, a historically Black neighborhood in Seattle, has undergone rapid gentrification over the past few decades, with Black people being displaced from the only neighborhood that we could legally live in until just years ago. While white men profit off of the legalization of marijuana, our prisons are still filled with Black people who are over-incarcerated for drug offenses.
This city is filled with white progressives, which is why Bernie Sanders camp was obviously expecting a friendly and consenting audience for todays campaign visit. The problem with Sanders, and with white Seattle progressives in general, is that they are utterly and totally useless (when not outright harmful) in terms of the fight for Black lives. While we are drowning in their liberal rhetoric, we have yet to see them support Black grassroots movements or take on any measure of risk and responsibility for ending the tyranny of white supremacy in our country and in our city. This willful passivity while claiming solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter movement in an effort to be relevant is over. White progressive Seattle and Bernie Sanders cannot call themselves liberals while they participate in the racist system that claims Black lives. Bernie Sanders will not continue to call himself a man of the people, while ignoring the plight of Black people. Presidential candidates will not win Black votes without putting out an explicit criminal justice reform package. As was said at the Netroots action, presidential candidates should expect to be shut down and confronted every step along the way of this presidential campaign. Black people are in a state of emergency. Lines have been drawn in the sand. You are either fighting continuously and measurably to protect Black life in America, or you are a part of the white supremacist system that we will tear down in the liberation of our people.
On this, nearly the one year anniversary of the ruthless murder of Mike Brown, we honor Black lives lost by doing the unthinkable, the unapologetic, and the unrespectable. Out of radical love for our Black brothers and sisters, we put our lives and our bodies on the line to testify to their persecution and resilience. We join together in Black love to #SayHerName and declare that #BlackLivesMatter, understanding that our love will disrupt the complicity and corruption of our anti-Black society; GOP, Democrat, and otherwise.
There is no business as usual while Black lives are lost. We will ensure this by any means necessary.
With the strength of our ancestors and for the future of our children,
Black Lives Matter Seattle Co-Founders

Bernie's campaign needs to work with event organizers to do a better job of securing the event, especially the stage access and microphones. People went to this event to hear Bernie speak on Social Security not listen to BLM bullies.

I'm black and a big supporter of Bernie. Like most of you, I appreciate and understand what's behind BLM's frustration and rage. I just don't understand the target. Or the goal in pulling something like this.
Sit down with Bernie and tell him what you want. If that doesn't work, then go to Plan B. You don't start there. And you don't beat up on what you perceive is an easy target, especially one that is in no way responsible for the problems you want to solve, unlike almost every single Republican politician.
Disheartening. Bernie doesn't deserve to be treated like this. If we knock him out of the race, I really fear for what's to come.

(18,402 posts)and it's not always fair. You don't always get to talk about what you want to talk about, you sometimes get attacked for things beyond your purview. But it's part of the deal. It's not for the faint of heartnot that I'm saying Bernie is faint of heart; he's not. But he will have to deal with what gets put on his plate if he becomes president, whether he likes it or not. We need to understand this.

(1,898 posts)Why attack the candidate that is on your side the most? Bernie has the best record on Civil Rights and standing against the growing militarization of the police and the war on drugs. This seems politically motivated to help one candidate over the other in the primaries.

(2 posts)As a Caucasian, I can only conceptually understand the rage of those black Americans who are politically active by voting consistently for Democratic candidates, yet have seen little improvement in the treatment of African-Americans by the State since the Civil Rights era. Schools and the Justice system are still failing too many African Americans. And I grasp why some would want to put Democratic leaders on the spot even more than Republican candidates. In fact, they should be asking Democrats "what am I getting if I vote for you?" If that question is not answered, the African-American community will return to low numbers of voters.
For all I know, these young women may have had real difficulty getting their agenda addressed. Candidates have been mostly silent on this issue. However, after the moderator graciously responded to their threats by giving them the microphone, I think they could have achieved something useful by simply asking "Senator Sanders, during your speech, please tell us what, if elected as President, you plan to do to ensure that Black Lives Matter as much as any other life in this country?"
Anger that has no constructive end benefits only the ego of the individual, and only momentarily.
