A far-right militia called Oath Keepers showed up in Ferguson, Missouri, toting assault rifles Monday night. The St. Louis County police chief called their presence “both unnecessary and inflammatory.” “They just showed up, walking around carrying their assault rifles,” a local Democratic committeewoman told NBC News. As The Daily Beast’s John Avlon has reported, the group was created in the early days of the Obama presidency and distributed business cards saying, “We will NOT obey any order to disarm the American people.”

Armed Oath Keepers Say They're Back In Ferguson To Protect Infowars Writer

Armed militia members were spotted early Tuesday at protests marking the one-year anniversary of Michael Brown's death in Ferguson, Missouri, where they were reportedly protecting a writer for one of the best known conspiracy theory websites in America.

Reuters reported that four men at the protests who carried military-style rifles and wore bulletproof vests identified themselves as members of the Oath Keepers, a loose-knit national organization of current and former military and law enforcement officers who pledge to defend the Constitution. A man who identified himself only as John told the news outlet that they were protecting a journalist from conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' website, Infowars.com.

In an item without a byline, Infowars said it did not "hire" the Oath Keepers, which is a group comprised of volunteers.

"Despite the remark by 'John,' Infowars did not hire the Oath Keepers to protect its journalists reporting from the embattled Missouri city," the item read. "The Oath Keepers went to Ferguson on their own without consulting with Infowars."

Heavily-armed members of a controversial right-wing "patriot" group added an extra dose of unease to protests in Ferguson, Missouri, early Tuesday.

The Oath Keepers organization says its members — all former military, police and first responders — pledge to "defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic."

However, St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar described their presence as "both unnecessary and inflammatory."

Protesters and police confirmed that a handful of Oath Keepers with what appeared to be assault rifles, bulletproof vest and camouflage gear were seen early Tuesday on the streets of Ferguson, which was under a state of emergency following demonstrations pegged to the anniversary of Michael Brown's death. ....................
