Gov. Bruce Rauner on Monday once again held out the possibility of pension relief for cash-strapped Chicago Public Schools, tying it to a property tax freeze, new education funding formula and anti-union measures.
This time, the first-year Republican governor added to the mix another potential poison pill for Democrats: limits on public workers' rights to compensation for job-related injuries.
Rauner, whose fight with ruling Democrats in the General Assembly has left state government operating without a full budget, has spent recent weeks trying to persuade lawmakers to go along with his agenda, often tying CPS' money woes to the effort.
On Monday, Rauner floated a proposal that combines his push to freeze property taxes and strip unions of their local collective bargaining rights with the promise of a new funding formula for schools and more than $400 million in immediate financial relief for CPS. It would also allow CPS to force teachers to pick up the cost of their own pension contributions, a key sticking point between Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Teachers Union.

(5,191 posts)A right-wing billionaire and like-minded super pacs spend millions on running slick ads that show Bruce is one of us and many fools fall for it. Once in office, his sole focus is to destroy unions.
Another thing that makes me crazy is that the media portrays the pension deficit as workers costing too much money for the state. They fail to mention that public service workers in Illinois don't get Social Security and IT WAS NOT THE WORKERS who failed to properly fund, barrowed from, and mismanaged the workers money with bad investments!

(1,933 posts)This is like reading the same thing over and over. Why do the voters fall for this crap. His main intention when running for office was union busting next was privatizing schools. As for CPS, who is going to take the blame when children are abused. Mitch Daniels tried this same thing and now Pence is dragging the same load of crap around but it didn't go over so well when Pence tried it. Kick them all out of office. Rauner is about as fiscally responsible as a 10 year old kid with a dollar in his pocket at a candy store.
