Russian source confirms S-300 missiles to be delivered to Iran this year

Source: The Jerusalem Post

A Russian diplomatic source on Wednesday corroborated an Iranian report earlier in the week which claimed that Moscow will supply four batteries of S-300 surface-to-air missiles.

According to the RIA Novosti news agency, a source in Russia's Foreign Ministry said that the deal would go ahead "this year for sure."

"What was in the contract, that's how many will be," the source said.

The report comes one day after Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan said that Iran and Russia will sign a deal that will see Moscow send Tehran the S-300 air-defense missile system by next week.

The UN weapons sanctions prohibit the importation of conventional arms or ballistic missile technology into Iran. American and EU sanctions additionally prohibit the importation of virtually all weapons into the country.

Because the S300 is a defensive anti-aircraft/anti-missile system, it's not covered by the UN embargo (it's not an offensive weapon, a conventional weapon, or a ballistic missile system). The American and EU sanctions, of course, don't apply to any nation beyond America (and those who wish to maintain financial trading ties with America) and the EU states. Russia doesn't fall into either group.

The S300 was never banned by the sanctions, but Russia suspended the sales anyway to apply pressure to Iran. The Russians have stated that they are resuming the sale as a carrot to get Iran to sign off on the new nuclear deal.

Like the U.S. Patriot system is an air & missile defense system compared to something like ATACMS that's a tactical (offensive) system.

I don't know what I call the people who are so cool with Iran and Russia, as well as other groups recently viewed as America's antagonists. Not sure liberal Democrats is the word.

All you've done is push Republican arguments.

Consider us unpersuaded.

The fact that you think significant numbers of liberals here are rooting for Iran and Russia is also what is known as a 'tell.'

That is a lifelong thing too. I do not feel this is in conflict with Liberal and/or Democratic principles (I know you disagree). I confess, I am somewhat dismayed about the recent rise in anti-Israel sentiment on the American left. But I'm not going to get pushed out of my party like some Matisyahu out of a music festival.

Every single argument you have ever made here is in line with not only Netanyahu, but Tom Cotton and Mitch McConnell.

I would recommend you take some of your 'dismay' and apply it to the ultrarightwing racist freakshow governing Israel.

Because, you know, liberals don't unconditionally support rightwing racists.

Or, in the alternative, you could actually put more effort into pretending to be a liberal Democrat.

Someone with the account name geek tragedy is accusing me of all sorts of things as nasty as he or she can think of. I think I'll go to my parents basement and cry. No, not really. I try to understand the Israeli perspective and the Palestinian perspective as well as other perspectives, and I am for trying to achieve peace and for treating people as well as possible in the absence of peace. You seem to have a great deal of identification with at least one Palestinian perspective, and no interest at all in the Israeli perspective. You also seem to not care about the future, only about winning the past. No Nobel Peace Prize for You!

to understand the Palestinian perspective, or the liberal Democratic perspective.

It's 100% rightwing politics. Every post supporting the Republican party and/or Likud.

Nothing about progressive taxation, or climate change, or labor rights, or GLBT rights in the US, or immigration, or the social safety net, or racial discrimination.

Nope. None of that.

All you want to talk about is pushing us into a war with Iran and excusing how Israel kicks the shit out of the Palestinians.

More posts about how oppressed Matisyahu is than African-Americans, the GLBT communities, Native Americans, American Muslims, etc are combined (sum total:0)

So, we see exactly where you're coming from. War with Iran, and promoting apartheid.
