Five deputy clerks tell federal judge they will issue marriage licenses in Rowan County

Source: Lexington Herald-Leader

ASHLAND — Faced with the threat of jail, five deputies of Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis told a federal judge Thursday that they will comply with his order to issue marriage licenses starting Friday morning.

The only holdout was deputy clerk Nathan Davis, who is the son of Kim Davis.

Earlier Thursday, U.S. District Judge David Bunning ordered Kim Davis jailed after finding her in contempt of court for ignoring his order to issue marriage licenses.

Bunning initially ordered Davis to remain in jail until she agrees to comply with his Aug. 12 order, but he scheduled a new hearing for 3:30 p.m. to reconsider that decision after her deputies said they would issue licenses in her absence.

as the deputies seem to be able to comply with the court order without her. As for her son, I believe he too should face the consequences of his decision.

What is missing is how the son of someone gets hired in her office in the first place.

I am from Appalachia, spent 30 years in the Army, worked back home for ten years, been gone for the last 15 years, will not return.

Nepotism is a way of life. If you go into most Appalachian counties -- the ones I am familiar with, at least -- and check out the sheriff's office, court clerk's office, school system, highway department, and any other county-based organization you'll find an elected official at the head of the office and his/her family filling all the other jobs.

Back in 1999, in one WV county, 15 percent of the teachers were high school graduates -- no college at all. Hired on "emergency certificates" approved by the county school superintendent. Every one of the teacher who held an emergency cert was either a member of his extended family, or, a cute young lady who spent a lot of time being "interviewed and mentored" by the superintendent.

When an elected official is un-elected or steps down, if the replacement is from another clan, there's massive firing and re-hiring.

In 1998 at the VA Medical Center in Johnson City, TN, 2/3 of the support staff were members of the same extended family, the matriarch of which was the HR director.

Her mother held the office of County Clerk for 40 years. When she retired, Kim Davis ran for office and won the position. I'm not sure if Kim Davis' son was working in that office before his grandmother retired but I wouldn't be surprised.

That's one reason companies don't like to hire people who are related. They already come with alliances.

Kim Davis will return to courtroom at 3:30 & tell judge if she's willing to let her deputies obey law over her objections. If not, jail.

Now we will see how "deeply held" her beliefs are as she had previously forbidden her clerks to issue them when she wasn't facing jail time.

I also worry she may fire everyone but her son and hire more bigots who will also refuse.

BREAKING: At Least Three Rowan County Clerks Dodge Jail And Will Issue Marriage Licenses - UPDATE: Only Davis’ Son Will Not Comply

September 3, 2015

Three of the six deputy clerks in Rowan County have decided that they don’t want to follow their boss into jail and will issue marriage licenses. After Kim Davis was led out of court in the custody of federal marshals, Judge David Bunning called the six deputy clerks back in to decide their own fates. It’s not yet known how Davis’ son has chosen. Developing story…

Ky. clerk's office will issue marriage licenses starting Friday

Mike Wynn and Chris Kenning, The (Louisville, Ky.) Courier-Journal 3:43 p.m. EDT September 3, 2015

....
{U.S. District Court Judge David Bunning} warned other clerks — at least two other counties in Kentucky also shuttered their marriage-license operations for all couples — that his order applied to them, too. Five of Davis' six deputy clerks told Bunning in an afternoon hearing that they would issue licenses, WOWK-TV, Charleston-Huntington, W.Va., reported; the holdout was Davis' son, who works in his mother's office.

The Bible is generally in favor of nepotism, but practicing nepotism among the coeds and innocents is an altogether worse sin.

I was actually just having a discussion with someone in my office about this. This person thought that if Ms. Davis was willing to allow her deputies to issue licenses, that she (herself) should not be forced to do something that goes against her religious beliefs.

I disagree. I believe she should certainly allow the deputies to issue licenses, but I also believe that if she (herself) will not follow the law, then she needs to resign and find another job, or else continue to cool her heels in the pockey. The duties of the County Clerk include the issuance of marriage licenses, and the Supreme Court has upheld the right for all persons to marry.

Ms. Davis' rights (religious or otherwise) are not being violated by someone else having the right to marry who they choose.

BREAKING: Kim Davis To Remain In Jail

September 3, 2015

After five of her six deputy clerks agreed to issue marriage licenses, Kim Davis was called back to the courtroom of Judge David Bunning, who offered to set her free if she would allow her staffers to perform their duties. Davis refused and was taken back out of the courthouse in the custody of federal marshals. Quite obviously the Liberty Counsel intends to make Davis into the figurehead of a national movement to defy the Supreme Court.

Instead, I think that she should be denied any marriage licenses for her upcoming marriages. After all she's only on #4 and I would think that guy (even if he is from KY) would know enough to head to the hills.

After she is denied any new marriage license, she should also be shunned and castigated if she wants to take up a relationship with any other husband-type person. She is a woman of gawd, afterall. And I can't imagine any sentient being with two or four feet wanting to associate with her, anyway.
